MG Finishes 8th at ASC Championships

the final round of the ASC Championships
The Schreiner Men's Golf team achieved one goal - to
qualify for the ASC Championship tournament - but didn't
perform as well as hoped and finished 8th at the event.
The tournament was played at Hurricane Creek Country Club in
Anna, TX and was a 36-18 format. This was the first
time that a Schreiner team had qualified for the event since
the field size was limited several years ago.
The Mountaineers started a bit slowly in the first round,
but found themselves only six shots out of fourth place
after an opening round 319. Sophomore Jay Chapman was
SU's top finisher with a 75. Freshman Jared Cornish
shot 78 over the 7,027 yard layout. Freshman Will
Ramon shot 82 and junior Kyle Grona 84.
In the afternoon 18, SU's scores went up and its chances of
moving up the leaderboard vanished. Chapman and Grona
were Schreiner's top finishers but neither could break 80
and the team struggled to a 333 round. It only got
worse in the final round as SU inexpectedly faded badly.
Chapman was SU's top finisher in 32nd, followed by Cornish
(34th). Grona was 39th and junior Brent Stanford,
playing his final tournament because he is graduating a year
early, came in 42nd. Ramon had to withdraw during the
final round due to illness.
"Trying to figure out what happened to the guys is a real
puzzle," said coach Ron Macosko. "(Co-coach) Anna
(Acker-Macosko) and I thought we were ready and expected a
surprise finish for our team based on the way we were
playing last week. We were surprised, but not the way
any of us had hoped. I guess we'll take the off-season
to figure out what happened and correct it. We don't
want to just make it to the tournament. Our goal is to
play for a championship, so we've got some work to do."
The Mountaineers only lose Stanford from this year's squad
but have two strong recruits committed for next year with a
spot remaining.
