tournament finish by coming in fourth at the SFC at Scott
Schreiner Golf Course.
KERRVILLE, TX - Senior Kyle Grona shot a second-straight
72 to finish fourth individually - and the Mountaineers
improved eight shots in tougher conditions - but still
finished in fifth place at the Schreiner Fall Classic.
The tournament was played at Scott Schreiner Golf Club and
was won by #15-ranked UT-Tyler, which defended its 2008
tournament win in the first year of the event.
The Mountaineers rebounded from a disappointing first day
with a 295, led by sophomore Jared Cornish, who also bounced
back well from his opening round by shooting 71 on the
second day. Grona's 72 earned him All-Tournament
honors while junior teammate Jay Chapman finished 14th
overall after firing a second round 74 to finish at 147.
Chapman finished a strong fall season shooting no higher in
his three fall tournaments than the 74 on Tuesday.
Cornish finished 22nd overall while freshman Kelby Ruiz
finished 30th after going 78-79. Another freshman,
Andy Bell, shot 79-83.
UT-Tyler backed up its first
round lead with a 290 for a two-day total of 576. Mary
Hardin-Baylor was second at 580, followed by Concordia (TX)
at 592 and Hardin-Simmons (594). Texas A&M
International finished behind SU at 617 and UT-Dallas was
seventh at 630.
UT-Tyler's Joey Rippel shot the tournament low round of 65
on Tuesday to claim medalist honors with a total of 139.
The Schreiner medalists finished 28th (sophomore Jay Ray),
31st (sophomore Mark Salazar) and 33rd (sophomore Will
Ramon) in the event. The Mountaineers now are off
until February when the spring season begins.
