Bell
is Schreiner MG's First GCAA Academic All-American
NORMAN, OK
--
Schreiner rising
senior Andy Bell became the first SU men's golfer in the
NCAA era to earn Golf Coaches Association of America
Academic All-American for the 2011-12 year.
Bell,
a native of Houston, TX (Clear Lake HS), currently
carries a 3.51 GPA in Political Science for the
Mountaineers. To earn the award, you must be a
standout performer both in the classroom, an integral
member of the team and of high moral character.
Bell has been a cornerstone of the rapidly-rising
Mountaineer golf program since arriving on campus in the
fall of 2009. During his first five semesters at
Schreiner, he had only failed to qualify for the travel
team one time (the first event of his collegiate
career). The Spring, 2012 semester was a tough one
for Bell though. A serious wrist injury cost him
several weeks early in the semester and unrelated health
problems cost him another month later in the spring.
Through it all, Bell has persevered.
The highlight of his playing year was at the Alamo City
Classic at River Crossing GC in Blanco, TX on October
24-25 where he shot 71-73 and claimed third place
overall. Despite the off and on course
challenges, Bell averaged 76.91 for the year in 11
tournament rounds for SU - third on the team.
Bell has earned President's List once in three years and
Dean's List twice and is a two-time member of the
Academic All-ASC team. He is also a recipient of
the prestigious Hatton W. Sumners Scholarship for the
development of citizen scholars and citizen leaders at
Schreiner University.
