Moore,
Ramos, Morrison Named First Team All-ASC;
Hayes is Coach-of-the-Year
The 2005 SU
Men's Soccer team had a breakthrough season in many respects
and balloting by ASC coaches reflected that as several
Mountaineers appeared on the All-ASC teams. Senior
defender
Michael Moore,
junior midfielder
David Ramos
and freshman goalkeeper
Nick Morrison
were each named to the All-American Southwest Conference
first team. Head Coach Paul Hayes was named ASC Coach
of the Year for guiding the Mountaineers to their second
straight ASC Tournament appearance and first-ever tournament
win.
Moore battled injuries (two concussions) and still was the
anchor to one of the ASC's top defenses. This is his
third year on the All-ASC list. Ramos was second on
the team in goals with 5 and added one assist to make his
second All-ASC appearance. Morrison had seven shutouts
in this rookie season and was named ASC Defensive Player of
the Week for September 19-25.
Sophomore midfielder
Roberto Garcia
was named to the All-ASC second team. He scored SU's
last goal of season trying to rally the team in the ASC
Tournament semifinals vs. top-seeded HSU but the
Mountaineers came up just short.
Hayes just
completed his third season at the helm of the Mountaineers.
His team won five matches in 2003, finished 10-10 in 2004
and went 10-7-2 this season and his number of ASC wins has
gone from four in '03 to nine in '05.
HSU
Ends SU's Season, 2-1, in ASC Semifinals
Schreiner was
up for the challenge of competing in its second match in 24
hours vs. a rested Hardin-Simmons on HSU's home turf.
Despite being outshot by the Moutaineers, 19-12, it was
Hardin-Simmons who was still standing to advance to the ASC
Championship in the end.
HSU's Nick Sager broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute
mark of the match. Going into the final 10 minutes of
the match, Schreiner's
David Ramos
had as many shots as (eight), and more shots on goal (7)
than the entire HSU team but the Mountaineers couldn't put
one in the net. HSU's David Salas scored with under
four minutes remaining in the match to make it 2-0, but the
gutsy Mountaineers were not finished. SU's
Roberto Garcia
scored on an assist from
Ben Roell,
to give SU a chance, but the clock ran out on what otherwise
was a breakthrough season for Mountaineers Soccer.
Coming into this year, the Mountaineers had never won vs.
either Hardin-Simmons or UT - Dallas, nor had a team every
won an ASC Tournament match. In 2005, those streaks
were ended. SU will lose three key contributors,
seniors
Michael Moore,
Scott Huckabay and
Andrew Ramirez,
but many key performers will return including several
freshmen who benefitted from extensive playing time this
season. In short, there was a lot to be proud of for
SU Men's Soccer in 2005 but expect more big things from the
Mountaineers in 2006.
Baker's Goal Lifts MSoccer
to 1st ASC Tourney Win
It was payback
time for Schreiner Men's Soccer. On Oct. 21, UT -
Dallas came into Kerrville and escaped with a 1-0 win in
overtime. On Friday afternoon in Abilene, the roles
were reversed when junior
Chad Baker
scored on a header with 25 minutes remaining in the match to
break a scoreless tie and give SU (10-6-2, 9-4-1 in ASC) a
1-0 victory and its first ASC Tournament win in history.
Now, the Mountaineers move on to battle tournament host and
top-seed Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in
Abilene. HSU will be looking for redemption as
Schreiner posted a 2-0 road win at HSU in September.
In addition to this being SU's first ASC Tournament win, it
was also the program's first-ever win over UT - Dallas.
When the Mountaineers won at HSU earlier this year, it was
also the first time that SU had ever defeated Hardin-Simmons
in men's soccer.
Mountaineers Take on UT-D in 1st Round of ASC Tourney
The SU Men's
Soccer team makes it second straight appearance in the ASC
Tournament when Coach Paul Hayes' gang takes on UT - Dallas
on Friday afternoon in Abilene, TX.
The Mountaineers (8-4-1 ASC) split last weekend's matches,
losing on Friday at Austin College, 1-0. Undeterred,
SU then put in a gutsy performance after a long bus trip and
quick turnaround and knocked off Ozarks, 2-1, in
Clarksville, AR. It was only the second loss for
Ozarks in ASC play. Tino Albarran, on a direct-kick
from
Roberto Garcia,
got the go-ahead goal at Ozarks and, after the home team
tied the score,
David Ramos
scored the game-winner (assist to Alberran) for the
Mountaineers.
Jeff Winton,
picked up his third win in goal.
Schreiner enters the ASC tournament as the #5 seed and gets
a chance to try to avenge a heartbreaking 1-0 home loss to
#4 UT-Dallas on Oct. 21. The winner takes on top-seed
and host Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
MS
Rolls Over #1 UTT, Split Key Weekend Matches
What a difference
a day makes. Led by two goals from
Tyler
Strickland and one goal from
Tino Albarran,
the Mountaineers powered past top-ranked UT-Tyler, 3-0, in
front of a large, festive Family Weekend crowd on Saturday.
The win was huge for SU because of a tough home loss the day
before to UT - Dallas, 1-0, in overtime.
On Saturday, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the
first half, but it was all Mountaineers in the second half.
Albarran scored the eventual game-winner at the 65-minute
mark on a feed by
Scott Huckabay.
Barely two minutes later, SU struck again as Strickland
scored with assists to both
Ryan Ross
and
Nick Johnson.
Strickland and Ross teamed up again on the third goal.
The defense was stellar in the win and
Nick Morrison
recorded his fifth shutout of the season, stopping four
shots.
On Friday, the
Mountaineers controlled the first half play vs. visiting
UT-Dallas, but the offense couldn't muster a shot in either
the second half or overtime. UTD's Justin Morris
scored less than 2 minutes into overtime to end the contest.
Return
to Form: Mountaineers Boot TLU 3-0
Coach Paul
Hayes' Men's Soccer team (7-3-1, 6-1 ASC) used suffocating
defense, great play on the road, and opportune scoring to
race to a 4-0 record in the ASC. After an up-and-down
stretch of matches, the Mountaineers returned to form in
shutting out Texas Lutheran (4-6-1, 3-3-1 ASC) 3-0 on a cold
and windy day in Seguin on Friday.
Freshman
Nick Morrison stopped seven shots to post his fourth
shutout of the season, while sophomore Tino Albarran
and senior Scott Huckabay each scored a goal and
assisted the other to give Schreiner more than enough
offense to retain their ASC lead. Albarran scored
first off Huckabay's feed at the 36-minute mark to put SU up
to stay. Then the tandem flipped roles five minutes
later to double the lead. Barely one minute later,
junior David Ramos made it 3-0 (off another assist by
Albarran) and the Mountaineers were in control.
Offensively, SU
presents problems because they feature many weapons.
Ramos and freshman Ryan Ross lead the team with four
goals each, followed closely by Albarran and Huckabay with
three each and then Chad Baker and Tyler
Strickland each have two goals. The Mountaineers
23 goals this season have been scored by 12 different
players and the 17 assists are spread out among 11 players
with Albarran and Huckabay leading the way with three each.
This match was
particularly important because TLU is SU's natural rival and
a TLU win would not only have knocked the Mountaineers out
of first place in the ASC but would have given TLU the
inside track to move past SU in the ASC standings.
Schreiner was picked to finish 7th in the ASC coaches
preseason poll.
SU
Crushes CUA to Salvage Split
Freshman
forward Ryan Ross (San Antonio, TX) scored a hat
trick and added an assist as the Mountaineers rolled over
visiting Concordia-Austin 6-1 on Saturday. The win is
some consolation after the Mountaineers surrendered a late
lead on Friday and eventually lost to visiting Mary
Hardin-Baylor 4-3 in double overtime.
Friday's match
was painful because the Mountaineers (6-2-1, 5-1 ASC)
controlled the action and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit
to take a 3-2 lead with five minutes remaining before giving
up the lead and the match.
Morrison Named ASC "Player of the Week"
Freshman
goalkeeper Nick Morrison was named American Southwest
Conference defensive "Player of the Week" for Sept. 19-25.
Morrison recorded two shutouts over the weekend and had 8
saves as the Mountaineers swept former ASC unbeaten teams
Hardin-Simmons and McMurry in Abilene.
Morrison has a streak of three straight shutouts and SU four
straight (sophomore Jeff Winton has the other) shutouts.
Schreiner leads the ASC in both goals allowed and goals
against average. The Mountaineers have only allowed
three goals this year, through seven matches.
Road
Warriors: Mountaineers Win 5th Straight
No
doubt about it, head coach Paul Hayes' team is streaking --
well actually several of them. Schreiner won its 5th
straight match, had its 4th straight shutout and ASC win and
knocked off another ASC undefeated team by beating McMurry,
2-0 in Abilene. Once again, the Mountaineers got up
early when junior midfielder David Ramos scored his
second goal of the season 12 minutes into the match off a
Scott Huckabay feed to give the Mountaineers a lead they
would not give up.
This
start is similar to the start of the prior day's match at
Hardin-Simmons. Unlike the HSU match, the Mountaineers
got the insurance goal right away as junior Aaron Mayes
tallied his first goal just four minutes later, unassisted,
for the 2-0 lead. Freshmen goalkeeper Nick Morrison
recorded his third straight shutout. The Mountaineers,
picked to finish 7th in the preseason voting by coaches, now
sit alone in first place in the ASC standings with a perfect
4-0 (5-1-1 overall) record. They have given up only
three goals through seven matches.
SU
Wins Battle of Undefeated Teams, 2-0
In a battle of undefeated ASC
teams, Schreiner (4-1-1, 3-0 ASC) knocked off Hardin-Simmons
(4-2-1, 2-1 ASC) in Abilene, 2-0. The Mountaineers
wasted little time in getting on top in the match as senior
forward Scott Huckabay (Round Rock, TX) scored his
second goal of the season on an assist by junior midfielder
Aaron Mayes (Round Rock, TX) at the 16 minute mark of
the first half.
SU would keep that tenuous lead through halftime and most of
the second half. The match wasn't decided until
freshman midfielder Jeremy Reinhard (San Antonio, TX)
gave the Mountaineers an insurmountable lead with his goal,
on an assist from sophomore forward Tino Albarran (Waller,
TX), with less than 2 minutes remaining in the match to seal
the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Nick Morrison (Bedford, TX)
recorded his second straight shutout stopping 19 shots.
The Mountaineers have recorded three straight shutouts
(sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Winton has the other) and
have won 4 straight matches.
SU
Boots Louisiana for Third Win in a Row
The SU Men's Soccer team (3-1-1,
2-0 ASC) continued its winning ways with a 3-0 shutout over
visiting ASC foe Louisiana College (1-5, 0-2) Saturday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Winton (Corpus Christi, TX)
got the shutout, stopping 10 shots in the match.
Schreiner started quickly in
this contest, with junior midfielder David Ramos
getting the Mountaineers on the scoreboard just 5 minutes
into the match on a pass from senior forward Scott
Huckabay (Round Rock, TX). Less than two minutes
later, Huckabay scored his first goal of the season on a
feed from sophomore defender Abe Garcia (Hockley, TX)
to put Mountaineers up 2-0. Just when it looked like
Schreiner would put the match away, the scoring stopped.
The match stayed the same
until junior forward Tyler Strickland (Angleton, TX)
tallied his first goal of the season on freshman forward
Ryan Ross' (San Antonio, TX) assist with less then two
minutes remaining in the match to account for the final
score. Coach Paul Hayes' squad is undefeated in its
last four matches and travels to Abilene next weekend to
take on Hardin-Simmons (Friday) and McMurry (Saturday).
Roell's Goal Lifts SU Past Mississippi 1-0
Facing
a scoreless tie with under 10 minutes remaining, SU junior defender Ben
Roell (Copperas Cove, TX) scored on an assist from
sophomore midfielder Roberto Garcia (Irving, TX).
That lone goal would stand up for a 1-0 win over visiting
Mississippi College in the ASC opener for both teams.
The Mountaineers (2-1-1, 1-0
ASC), as they have done the past several matches, dominated
the match outshooting the Choctaws 22-6.
After two straight overtime
matches, it was looking like the Mountaineers were headed to
overtime again, until Garcia and Roell teamed up for the
winning goal. Freshman goalkeeper Nick Morrison
(Bedford, TX) recorded his first collegiate shutout, turning
away six shots overall.
Schreiner hosts
Louisiana College Saturday afternoon at 1 pm with the
women's match after.
Baker's Goal Gives SU 2-1 OT Win
Just
one day after 110 minutes of action couldn't decide a winner
in their match vs. UTPB, the SU Men's Soccer team found
itself back in an overtime situation on Sunday vs.
University of Dallas. This time it took only 5:28
of overtime as junior midfielder Chad Baker
punched in a rebound off a bobbled direct kick by junior
defender Ben Roell (Copperas Cove, TX) to give SU the
2-1 victory. It was Baker's second goal in as many
days.
Coach Paul Hayes' crew
(1-1-1) took the lead when sophomore forward Tino
Albarran (Waller, TX) scored off a slick feed from
junior midfielder Aaron Mayes (Round Rock, TX) at the
18-minute mark of the first half. It looked like that
goal would stand up and freshman goalkeeper Nick Morrison
would record his first shutout until Dallas' Adam Lunger
headed in a shot with less than nine minutes remaining to
tie the match.
In the women's match between
the two schools, Dallas scored three first half goals and
posted a 5-0 win over the Schreiner women (1-3).
SU
Men Tie UTPB, 1-1
Despite
dominating the second half, and then having the better
scoring chances in the overtimes, SU's Men's Soccer team
(0-1-1) came away with a 1-1 tie with UT - Permian Basin in
their non-conference home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Mountaineer junior midfielder Chad Baker (New
Braunfels, TX) scored to put the maroon & white on top at
the 21-minute mark of the first half on an assist by junior
forward Tyler Strickland (Angleton, TX). The
Falcons (2-0-3) answered with a goal of their own at the
29-minute mark.
In the second
half, the Mountaineers dominated play and the scoring
attempts, but couldn't convert. UTPB goalkeeper Gage Peterson single-handedly kept the
Falcons alive and then came up big again in the second
overtime, stopping three point-blank scoring opportunities
for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers outshot UTPB
22-4 in the second half. SU sophomore goalkeeper Jeff
Winton (Corpus Christi, TX) also came up with some great
saves.
Schreiner only
has one day before returning to the pitch Sunday afternoon
to host University of Dallas. Match time is at 3:00
pm.
In the women's contest between the two schools, UTPB (3-3)
took a 4-0 lead in the first half and went on to score a 5-1
win. The SU women (1-2) held their own in the second
half, with sophomore midfielder Evelyn Gonzalez
(Converse, TX) getting SU's lone goal, in the loss.
Men's
Soccer Comes Up Just Short vs. #23 OBU
Schreiner University Head Coach Paul Hayes knew his team was
up against a nationally-ranked opponent. What he didn't
know was how his own team would perform. Starting two
freshman in their first match, and having three others coming
off the bench, the new and old blended very well and nearly
upset the #23-ranked Oklahoma Baptist Bisons (4-0).
The match
was a scoreless tie at halftime. The only score of the
day came early in the second half, when OBU's Pablo
Campos converted a disputed penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Nick Morrison (Bedford, TX), a true freshman who started at
goalkeeper for the Mountaineers, was outstanding in his debut.
He stopped 7 shots. Schreiner (0-1) was slightly outshot in the
contest 14-9.
"Every one
of our guys performed well," said Hayes. "This was, by
far, our best showing of the season. To play an
experienced nationally-ranked program like OBU to a virtual
draw was outstanding and gives us a positive outlook heading
into the conference schedule. Our defensive line stayed
organized and intense for 90 minutes. I was very pleased
with the way we played."
Senior
Michael Moore
and
junior
Aaron Mayes
were
named Academic All-Conference by the American Southwest
Conference. Moore started 18 matches (he missed
one due to injury) for the Mountaineers and was a
captain and stalwart on one of ASC's toughest defenses.
Last month, his outstanding on-field play resulted in
his being named first team All-ASC. He is an
Accounting/MIS major and graduates in May.
Mayes, an
Engineering major, started every SU match during SU's
breakthrough 2005 campaign. He was tied for fourth
on the team in scoring. Although he has a year of
eligibility remaining, he also will be graduating in
May.
