SCHREINER'S
FAST START IS TOO MUCH FOR D-II
UT-PERMIAN BASIN
The SU Men's
Soccer team is showing the same outstanding
defensive abilities as last year's
record-breaking team. That prowess was on
display again in a 2-1 road win at NCAA Division
II (scholarship) UT-Permian Basin as the
Mountaineers started fast and held off UTPB 2-1.
Schreiner jumped ahead quickly, scoring on a
Tino Albarran goal on an assist by Ernest
Villarreal at the seven minute mark. The
Mountaineers doubled their lead sixteen minutes
later when the two teamed up again - this time
with the roles reversed. Albarran, a
junior, is off to a tremendous start this season
with 3 goals and four assists in just three
matches. For the freshman Villarreal, he
has two goals early in his first collegiate
year.
In the second
half, UTPB became the aggressor and outshot SU
9-7 but could only beat sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Morrison and his defensive teammates once
as Schreiner was able to preserve the win.
The two teams battled last year to a 1-1 tie
after two overtimes in Kerrville.
