MOUNTAINEERS
LOSE HEARTBREAKER IN 2OT
Schreiner and
Hardin-Simmons are developing a tremendous
rivalry in men's soccer. Last year, the
two teams split a pair of matches, with SU
spoiling HSU's opening of it's new soccer
facility with a 2-0 win in Abilene. Then
the two teams met in the semi-finals of the ASC
Tournament and HSU escaped with a 2-1 win on its
home field.
The latest
installment took place in Kerrville and it may
have been the best contest yet. The two
teams battled for 108 minutes of scoreless
action. With barely 90 seconds remaining
in double overtime, HSU's all-conference forward
David Salas scored on a header past Mountaineer
goalkeeper Nick Morrison to break the scoring
drought and give Hardin-Simmons the emotional
win.
Both teams had chances in regulation and the
first overtime, possibly the best being on a
shot by Schreiner junior Roberto Garcia that hit
the post with less than two minutes remaining in
the first overtime. HSU outshot Schreiner
27-18 in the contest and held a 14-5 lead in
shots on goal. The goal spoiled an
outstanding match by Morrison, who had 13 saves
on the day. |
