Mountaineers Avoid Upset with Win over HPU
Even though it was
a road contest, Saturday's match against
first-year soccer program Howard Payne figured
to be relatively easy - on paper. That was
until the injuries started piling up for
Schreiner. No less than 10 players have
suffered injuries, and Saturday's match saw a
bunch of starters sitting on the sidelines.
That, combined with a strong showing from Howard
Payne, and Schreiner was fortunate to escape
with a 2-1 win. With starting goalkeeper
Nick Morrison out with an ankle injury, junior
Jeff Winton provided solid play in goal and the
Mountaineer defense continued to limit
opportunities.
Junior
Tino
Albarran continued his hot early season start
with a goal and freshman teammate
Jorge Pineda
netted his first collegiate goal. Those
two were enough, barely, to get the win.
The Mountaineers dominated the action again, but
couldn't put pesky Howard Payne away.
Still, the banged up SU squad got the win it
needed heading into a tough Friday match vs.
Texas Lutheran. With only one match in the
next 12 days, it's hoped that many Mountaineers
will be healthy for a rugged stretch of matches
that will determine the qualifiers in a
particularly balanced ASC race this year. |
