Mountaineers
Earn Split to Stay in ASC Race
Tino Albarran
had two goals,
Ernest Villareal
had a goal and an assist and
David Ramos
added two assists to power Schreiner Men's
Soccer to a 3-1 win at Concordia-Austin and a
weekend split. The victory wasn't secured
until
Nick Morrison
made a tremendous stop on a penalty kick to
maintain the 3-1 edge.
Saturday's result was important because the
Mountaineers were coming off a tough 2-0 loss at
UT-Tyler in a battle for ASC regular-season
leadership on Friday afternoon. After that
tough loss, another loss could have doomed
Schreiner's hopes of a regular-season title.
Albarran got SU
on the board first at CUA off an assist from
Ramos. CUA answered back with a goal of
its own and the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1
at halftime. Albarran's second goal turned
out to be the difference as Villarreal - who
played despite suffering a shoulder injury on
Friday - earned the assist. Villarreal's
goal was extra insurance and might have been
even more important if Morrison didn't make the
defensive stop of the match.
Holding that
3-1 lead with 15 minutes left, SU was whistled
for a foul in the box. On the ensuing
penalty kick, Morrison dove to his left and
somehow deflected and smothered a bullet shot
seemingly heading for the corner of the net.
The win improves the Mountaineers ASC record to
7-2 heading into its final home weekend.
On Friday, UT-Tyler got the key first goal on an
unexpected gift from the Mountaineer defense.
The league's toughest unit to score against gave
up an own goal with gave UT-Tyler the lead and
momentum going into halftime. Schreiner
played aggressively in the second half but
couldn't convert its chances and a late goal by
UT-Tyler sealed the Mountaineers fate. |
