Early Red Card,
Late Own Goal Derails Mountaineers
The SU
Mountaineers had a lot of adversity to overcome
on Saturday if it wanted to take the next step
towards possibly hosting the ASC Tournament.
The first was its opponent, UT-Dallas.
UT-D was looking to win in Kerrville for the
second straight year and was coming off a road
loss at TLU. An opponent in a must-win
situation is always difficult. The second
obstacle happened just over 20 minutes into the
match when freshman Ernest Villarreal was given
a red card. That meant that Schreiner
would have to play one man down for nearly the
entire match. UT-D made the advantage pay
off 15 minutes later when Jason Lynn scored to
give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Despite trailing
at halftime and the player differential, the
Mountaineers persevered and
Tino Albarran's
goal seven minutes into the second half tied the
score. With five minutes remaining in
regulation, SU would have one more obstacle that
it ultimately would not overcome - an own goal.
A shot by UT-D's Kevin White was accidentally
deflected into the Mountaineer goal by an SU
defender and that goal was the difference as
Schreiner fell to 8-3 in ASC play with the 2-1
loss.
Even in defeat, Schreiner still resides in a
three-way tie for second place in the ASC and
faces a long road trip to both Mississippi and
Louisiana College in the regular-season's final
weekend to decide it's fate. |
