Mountaineers
Tie #1-Ranked Trinity, 2-2
On
the schedule, it looked like a tough time to
play the nation's top-ranked soccer team.
Schreiner is in the middle of a key run of ASC
matches that will decide postseason tournament
positions and also who will host the tournament.
The Mountaineers are coming off an emotional
weekend and only have three days before a key
final-weekend road trip.
With all that
going on, Schreiner stepped out of conference to
travel to San Antonio to play the nation's
top-ranked team - Trinity. All the
Mountaineers did was get the first goal, take a
1-0 lead into halftime, go up 2-0 early in the
second half before Trinity could mount a furious
late rally that ultimately tied the score at the
end of regulation. Two overtime periods
could not decide the outcome so the two teams
had to settle for a 2-2 tie. For Trinity,
it was their only blemish of the season
(15-0-1). Although it was their first
non-win, Trinity was able to extend its home
unbeaten streak to 60 matches.
Ben Roell got
Schreiner on the board first by scoring at the
17 minute mark off an assist from
David Ramos.
The Mountaineers, despite being outshot 12-2 in
the half, held the 1-0 lead at the break.
Ramos gave SU a two goal lead fifteen minutes
into the second half, unassisted. Trinity
cut its deficit in half five minutes later and
added the tying goal with less than five minutes
remaining in regulation.
Nick Morrison
recorded 12 saves in the match, including three
in the two overtimes, to preserve the tie. |
