Defense and
Baker's Two Goals Lead SU Past Louisiana, 4-0
It
was the match that almost wasn't. Heavy
rains that drenched the Gulf Coast for
more than one week almost made the pitch at
Louisiana College unplayable. Fortunately,
the rains ended long enough that the match could
be played. Schreiner Men's Soccer didn't
let the uncertainty bother them as seniors
Chad Baker and
Tyler Strickland
each netted first half goals. For the SU
defense, that was more than enough offense to
secure the key late-season win.
Baker got the scoring started off an assist to
Strickland. Shortly
after, Strickland scored on a toe-in off a pass
from
Tino Albarran.
That 2-0 lead carried into halftime but the
Mountaineers added more insurance goals in the
second half. Baker scored his second goal
(and doubled his season total to 4) in the
second half off an assist from
David Ramos.
The Mountaineers then made it 4-0 as
Roberto Garcia
scored off an assist from
Ernest Villarreal.
Nick Morrison
and the SU defense more than did their part in
recording the team's sixth shutout of the
season. The win gives SU a 9-3 record in
the ASC with one match remaining. The nine
wins are the most a Schreiner soccer team has
earned in SU's 7 years as an ASC member.
The win also assures Schreiner of a spot in the
ASC Tournament for the third year in a row -
also a first for SU soccer and keeps the
Mountaineers hopes alive for hosting the ASC
Men's Soccer Tournament next week in Kerrville. |
