Morrison
Named ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year;
Mountaineers Picked 5th in Preseason Poll
(8/22/06)
SU sophomore goalkeeper Nick
Morrison was named the American Southwest
Conference (ASC) preseason Defensive
Player-of-the-Year in a vote of conference
coaches and SIDs. The award comes after a
rookie season in which Morrison set an SU
single-season record with seven shutouts and
posted a 1.03 goals-against average. He
was also named ASC Defensive Player-of-the-Week
for September 19-25 when he recorded two
shutouts and 8 total saves in match road wins
over Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
The
seven shutouts also has already placed Morrison
in a tie for first place for total career
shutouts at SU.

In
the team poll, the Mountaineers were picked to
finish fifth this season, which is the same spot
where SU ended up last season. Last year,
Schreiner led the ASC through a good part of the
season, but tough losses in the final two
weekends saw the Mountaineers finish one
game out of the top spot. Still, it was a
second straight highly-successful year for SU
Men's Soccer and head coach Paul Hayes.
The Mountaineers broke nearly every team
defensive record and set a new standard for
season winning percentage as Schreiner qualified
for its second straight post-season tournament
bid. In the tournament, SU won it's
first-ever post-season tournament match but fell
in the second round to the top seed and
tournament host. Hayes was named ASC
Coach-of-the-Year for his efforts. |
