Two SU First
Half Goals Pave Way to Season-Opening Win
It took a little
longer for the season to get started but the
wait was worth it for the Mountaineers in a 2-1
win over the St. Thomas in Tyler.
Schreiner was supposed to start it's season on
Friday, but the match against nationally-ranked
Southern Nazarene was cancelled due to lightning
and heavy rains. The Mountaineers used the
extra wait to advantage and came out on fire in
the first half vs. St. Thomas.
Junior
Ryan Ross, out
almost all of last year due to a knee injury,
scored the season's first goal on a pass from
senior
Roberto Garcia.
Schreiner (1-0) took a 2-0 lead when a pair of
freshmen teamed up for the team's second goal.
Juan Bonilla, who went to school just up the
road from Tyler in Longview, scored with an
assist to Krisjon Phillips.
The Mountaineers took the 2-0 lead into halftime
and continued to lead by that margin until very
late in the match. With just a couple of
minutes remaining, St. Thomas was awarded a penalty
kick after an SU foul. Senior goalkeeper
Jeff Winton, who was playing in place of the
injured preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Nick Morrison, was working on a shutout but
St. Thomas scored on the ensuing penalty kick to cut
the lead in half.
Winton and
Schreiner's defense made the lead stand up and
gained the non-conference victory for the
Mountaineers. |
