Mountaineers
Cruise Past HPU, Gain Weekend Split
Schreiner's
offense dominated Saturday's match in posting a
convincing 3-0 win vs. visiting Howard Payne.
The Mountaineers scored their highest number of
goals this season in improving to 2-3-1 overall
and 1-2-1 in the ASC. The win earned a
weekend split after SU suffered a tough 1-0 loss
on Friday on a questionable goal.
Although Schreiner was dominant in the offensive
stats, eventually owning a 25-7 edge in shots
for the match, the two teams were in a scoreless
tie at halftime Saturday. Senior Ryan Ross
scored his second goal of the season 13 minutes
into the second half on a straight pass from
fellow senior Travis Curd to put the
Mountaineers ahead to stay. Eight minutes
later, Ross chipped a gorgeous pass across the
goal mouth to freshman Krisjon Phillips who
headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.
As nice as those two goals were, the outstanding
goal of the day, and possibly of the season came
from senior Tino Albarran who booted a laser
into the corner of the net from at least 35
yards out for the match's final goal.
Sophomore Michael Flynn assisted on Albarran's
goal. Junior goalkeeper Nick Morrison
recorded his first shutout of the season and
extended his school record to 12 in two-plus
years.
The big win took some of the sting out of
Friday's loss. For more than 85
minutes, Schreiner and Mary Hardin-Baylor were
locked in an evenly matched, scoreless tie.
With less than four minutes remaining, it
appeared to nearly all watching that UMHB's
Jeremy Whitehurst was well offsides. The
officials didn't agree and Whitehurst was left
alone with Morrison and converted the chance for
the 1-0 win. |
