Five Goals Not
Enough as SU Drops Pair in East Texas
Schreiner lost road matches at LeTourneau and
East Texas Baptist by scores of 4-2 and 4-3
respectively.
This fall, the young Schreiner Men's Soccer team
has sometimes found it difficult to score goals.
Through nine prior matches, SU was only able to
score more than one goal on three occasions.
Offense wasn't the issue as Schreiner scored
five goals in two matches, but lost both.
At LeTourneau, SU broke on top just five-plus
minutes into the match as freshman Krisjon
Phillips scored his third goal of the season on
an assist from senior Ryan Ross. It didn't
take long for the Yellowjackets to respond.
Three minutes later, LU answered with a goal of
their own to tie the match. LeTourneau
kept up the pressure and added two more goals
halfway through the first period. With 10
minutes remaining until halftime, SU freshman
Jeremy Leoni scored his second goal of the
season on a low cross in front of the box from
junior transfer Julio Rodriguez, to make it 3-2
at the break.
The match continued to be closely contested
throughout the second half but LeTourneau
(4-6-2, 2-4-1 in ASC) got an insurance goal with
seven minutes remaining.
At East Texas Baptist, the home team broke on
top with two early goals but Schreiner patiently
worked its way back into the match with two
goals of their own. Early in the second
half, SU was called for a red card and had to
play the final 35 minutes a man down. ETBU
took advantage and went ahead 3-2. Again,
Schreiner (2-8-1, 1-5-1 in ASC) answered back to
tie the match. With under 10 minutes
remaining, ETBU (6-4-2, 5-2-1 in ASC) got the
winning goal on a disputed penalty kick as the
hard-luck Mountaineers lost another
heartbreaker.
To make matters
worse, SU lost two more players for the
remainder of the season due to injuries.
Juan Munoz suffered a knee injury and Jeremy
Reinhard a shoulder injury. |
