Mississippi
Ends SU's Season with Overtime Loss
Schreiner couldn't hold a 2-1 second half lead
and eventually lost, 3-2, in overtime to
visiting Mississippi College on Senior Day.
Senior Ryan Ross' two goals were not enough as
SU dropped another close match.
Ross first goal at the 18 minute mark gave the
Mountaineers an early lead. Junior Jeremy
Reinhard set up Ross with a cross-goal pass that
Ross redirected into the back of the net.
MC evened the score eight minutes later on a
penalty kick.
Schreiner looked to have a big advantage when
MC's Gerard Ashley was assessed a red card with
five minutes remaining before halftime.
Schreiner had a man advantage but the match was
still tied 1-1 at halftime.
The Mountaineers again took the lead on Ross'
second goal - this one off a header from senior
Tino Albarran. Again Mississippi countered
quickly to tie the match, this on a short-handed
goal. SU gave that man advantage back when
Albarran received a red card of his own and the
teams were back to even strength.
Mississippi started controlling the action but
the two teams finished regulation, tied at
2-apiece.
It took only 25 seconds for MC to end the
contest on a goal by Phillip Buffington.
Schreiner ends its season with a record of
3-13-1 (2-10-1 in the ASC). The
Mountaineers, who finished second in the ASC
last year and hosted the ASC Championships,
could only manage an 11th place finish this
year. Mississippi College tied for the ASC
regular-season championship with the win. |
