Schreiner Falls
at UT-Permian Basin, 2-0
Although Schreiner Men's Soccer head coach Paul
Hayes' team is 0-2 on the young season, he is
quietly optimistic about what he is seeing from
his young team. That continued on Thursday
as the Mountaineers played solidly but still
fell to NCAA Division II (scholarship)
UT-Permian Basin by a 2-0 score.
Even though SU is a non-scholarship program, the
match was evenly played throughout with both
teams having chances to score in the first half.
UTPB took advantage of one of its opportunities
and took a 1-0 lead into intermission. In
the second half, it was more of the same as both
teams tested each other's respective
goalkeepers. For Schreiner, this meant a
challenge for freshman Matt Johnson who was
starting his second first collegiate match in goal.
Earlier in the week, Schreiner hung tough but
was outlasted at NAIA
(scholarship) Our Lady of Lake, 2-1.
UTPB got its second goal early in the second
half which ended the scoring. Freshman
Zach Williams, who missed all of last year with
an injury and received a medical hardship
waiver, led SU with five shots - three of which
were on goal.
Williams scored Schreiner's only goal in the
OLLU match on an assist by freshman Taylor Bontz. |
