Double Dose of Heartbreak: SU Drops Pair
of Road Matches
Head
Coach Paul Hayes and his Mountaineers probably
thought they had a case of deja vu as Schreiner
dropped a pair of closely fought matches by
identical 1-0 scores. This year, even with
a very young team, Schreiner (0-5, 0-2 in ASC)
has gotten back to its roots and has played very
solid defense so far in 2008. The team has
had some struggles finding the back on the net
and last weekend's openers in the American
Southwest Conference were no different.
On Friday, SU played at Howard Payne (2-0-1, 1-0
in ASC). As has been the case all season,
the Mountaineers played the home team to a
virtual draw. Both teams had chances but
neither team could convert in the first 45
minutes of action. It was more of the same
through 35 minutes of the second half.
With eight minutes remaining in regulation,
HPU's Ben Bishop scored the matches only goal,
unassisted, to give Howard Payne the narrowest
1-0 win.
Schreiner and HPU were evenly matched on the
stat sheet but Howard Payne led where it
mattered over the hard-luck SU squad. Both
teams had 13 shots in the match. Freshman
Phillip Anderson and sophomore Juan Bonilla each
had three shots to lead SU. Freshman Matt
Johnson had four saves in goal.
Less than 24 hours later, Schreiner was back on
the pitch, this time at Mary Hardin-Baylor
(2-1-1, 1-0-1 in ASC). Again, SU battled
the home team to a 0-0 draw through the first
half of action. In a defensive
struggle, UMHB took the key early lead in the
second half on Gilbert Orozco's goal which would
turn out to be the final margin. Neither
team could manage much offensive pressure again
the other team's defense. Neither team
could manage double figures in shots.
Schreiner returns to action at home this Friday
against Texas Lutheran at Mountaineer Field.
