Falls Behind ETBU Early but Counters for Tie

Although ETBU scored early in their match at
Schreiner, SU quickly answered and the two teams
would finish in a 1-1 tie. After only
seventeen minutes of action, the two teams had
each scored but that would be the scoreboards
would get no additional work through the second
half and two overtimes.
Schreiner has been THE hard luck team in the ASC
so far this fall, so you can forgive them and
their fans if temporary despair broke out after
East Texas Baptist's Erik Romero scored just
over 13 minutes into the match. The
Mountaineers (0-6-1, 0-3-1 in ASC) have been on
the wrong side of 1-0 counts throughout the
fall. This team continues to show no quit
and that was evident three minutes later when
freshman Zach Williams scored on an assist by
another freshman, Taylor Bontz, to tie the
score.
In a remarkably evenly played match, the
defenses would control the rest of the action.
Statistically, the two teams were mirror images
of each other. Both goalkeepers have four
saves and allowed one goal. East Texas
Baptist (5-2-2, 3-1-1 in ASC) had 20 shots to 19
for Schreiner. SU was led by Bontz with
five shots while sophomores Jeremy Leoni and
Kenny Benson had three and two respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper Matt Johnson was again solid
in goal for the Mountaineers who return to
action Saturday afternoon at Mountaineer Field
to host LeTourneau. |
