SU Head
Coach Paul Hayes and his team had a long trip
home but it certainly went faster after the
Mountaineers beat Louisiana College, 2-0, on
Saturday. It was the final road match of
the season for the Mountaineers. On
Friday, Schreiner's defense kept ASC preseason
Player-of-the-Year Phillip Buffington in check
as SU earned a 0-0 tie.
On Saturday, Schreiner and Louisiana (1-15, 1-10
in ASC) were scoreless going into halftime.
Fairly early into the second half, freshman Adam
Harvey scored the go-ahead goal off an assist by
SU goalkeeper Matt Johnson for a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Rudy Moreno crushed a direct kick into
the upper right corner of the goal with 10
minutes remaining to give SU (2-9-3, 2-6-3 in
ASC) a two goal advantage it would not
relinquish. Johnson had eight saves while
earning his third shutout of the year and second
in just over 24 hours.
In the Friday match against the Mississippi
College Choctaws (9-2-3, 6-2-2 in ASC), the
Mountaineer defenders, led by another great
match from Johnson in goal (14 saves), were the
story. Playing in a steady rain, under
cold temperatures, defenders Jeremy Reinhard,
Lee Bosserman and Tanner Overstake, helped
neutralize the talented Choctaw offense.
Overstake (a freshman) in particular was
particularly effective in keeping Buffington
from scoring.
Schreiner has two home matches remaining next
weekend to close out the season.
