Anderson's
2nd Goal Sends SU to OT Win in Season Finale
Photo:
Despite being injured, both seniors Brad Baker
(21) and Nick Morrison (green jersey) got to
play briefly in their final match.
Freshman Phillip Anderson scored his second goal
of the match off a nice feed from sophomore
Stephen Gonzalez with 1:21 remaining in overtime
to propel Schreiner to a 2-1 win in the final
match of the season.
After a scoreless first half of action, visiting
McMurry scored just two minutes into the second
half of the match and looked like it might
finally get its first win of the season.
With 20 minutes remaining, it was still 1-0 in
favor of McM (0-16-1, 0-12-1 in ASC).
That's when Anderson first struck the back of
the net. His sixth goal of the season,
unassisted, knotted the match. Although
both teams had chances, neither would score
again in regulation.
In overtime, again both teams had a chance to
end it although Schreiner had the lion's share
of the opportunities. Still, it came down
to a terrific feed from Gonzalez and Anderson
redirected the ball past McM's Leeland Karpf to
give SU (3-9-4, 3-7-3 in ASC) the win.
It was Anderson's seventh goal of the year.
The match was bittersweet because it was the
final home contest for SU's three seniors, Nick
Morrison, Brad Baker and Jeremy Reinhard.
Typical of the difficult season the Schreiner's
soccer teams have endured, all three were
injured. Morrison, who despite missing
nearly his entire senior season, still holds all
the SU goalkeeping records, and Baker, who's
been out the past three weekends because of a
concussion, were able to make a ceremonial start
in the match. They were immediately
replaced with healthy players. Reinhard,
who had started every match of his four-year
career but suffered a major knee injury yesterday
was still able to keep his streak alive before
also being replaced immediately. It was nice for the home
fans to see Morrison, Baker and Reinhard on the
field, if only for a brief moment.
It's small consolation, but because of Anderson
and Gonzalez in particular, and some fine
goalkeeping from Morrison's replacement,
freshmen Matt Johnson, all three seniors got to
enjoy a final win on their home field.
With all three seniors out and no juniors on the
roster, the Mountaineers exclusively played
freshmen and sophomores in the match and showed
some of the potential this team has for the
future. |
