SU
Seals ASC Playoff Birth with Win
Over McMurry
ABILENE, TX - The Schreiner
Men's Soccer team clinches their
first ASC Playoff birth since
2006 with a 2-0 victory over McMurry.
With the win, the Mountaineers
earn the fourth seed in the six
team tournament field and will
play #5 seed Howard Payne on
Friday at 11:00 am at UMHB in
Belton. SU, HPU and
Mississippi College all tied for
fourth place in the regular
season standings but Schreiner
won the tiebreaker and earned
the highest seed of the three
teams. The two teams
met in Kerrville on September
18th with Schreiner getting the
1-0 win in overtime.
As for Saturday's match,
Schreiner dominated the action,
outshooting McM 18-1, but it was
a still a scoreless tie at
halftime. With their
season on the line in the second
half, junior Jeremy Leoni had
the tie-breaking goal midway
through the second period on an
assist from Adam Harvey.
Less than six minutes later,
Harvey again provided the
assist, this time to sophomore
Taylor Bontz, as Schreiner
picked up an insurance goal.
Sophomore Matt Johnson picked up
another shutout, only needing to
make two saves as the
Mountaineer defense was again
stifling.
The win caps a regular season
turnaround for the Mountaineers
and a return to the ASC
playoffs. After appearing
in the ASC tournament for three
straight years (2004-06), the
past two have seen a dropoff.
The Mountaineers were picked to
finish 11th this year, but
happily return to the ASC
playoff hunt as SU finished
7-3-3 in the conference, which
claimed the fourth spot. |
