Mountaineers to Face Howard Payne in First Round of ASC Tourney


RICHARDSON, TX - (primarily from ASC press release)  Schreiner Men's Soccer will open the 2009 ASC Championship Tournament with a first round match against Howard Payne on Friday, Nov. 6th at 11:00 am in Belton, TX.  The two teams faced each other already this season in Kerrville, with SU gaining the close 1-0 win in overtime.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor went 11-2 in league play to become regular season champions for the first time in program history and also earned the right to host the 2009 American Southwest Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament on Nov. 6-8 at Cru Sports Plex in Belton, Texas.

The entire six-team, single elimination event will be available for fans through live statistics, while Sunday’s championship game will also have live audio. All links can be found on the “Tournament Central” page on the conference’s website.

Head coach Brad Bankhead’s Cru (13-3) earned a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed. UMHB will also be serving as host of the ASC men’s soccer tournament for the first time in program history. Hardin-Simmons University (9-2-5), which has won two of the last four ASC titles and six overall, locked up the No. 2 seed and the other first-round bye.

The University of the Ozarks (12-4-2), the 2003 ASC champion, will be the No. 3 seed. Schreiner University (8-6-3), Howard Payne University (9-7-1) and Mississippi College (12-4-3) all had the same conference winning percentage, but due to the league tie-breaker procedure, Schreiner will be the No. 4 seed, Howard Payne will be No. 5 and Mississippi College will be No. 6.

Friday’s first-round matchups include SU against HPU at 11 a.m., with the winner getting UMHB in Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinal. UO and MC will duel on Friday at 2 p.m., with the victor going against HSU at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. The championship game is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The only returning All-Tournament selection from 2008 is junior defender Chris O’Brien of Hardin-Simmons.

The ASC tournament winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship.

NOTES:

· Admission: $5 for adults, $3 for students/children.

· No complimentary admission passes will be accepted.

· This is the 12th year of the ASC men’s soccer tournament.

First Round - Lost to #3 seed, Hardin-Simmons, 0-2

 

2005:
Qualified as #5 seed (8-4-1)
First Round - defeated #4 seed UT-Dallas, 2-1

Second Round - Lost to #1 seed, Hardin-Simmons, 1-2
 

2006:
Qualified as #1 seed (10-3-0)

Hosted Championship

Second Round - Lost to #4 seed, Mississippi College, 2-3

 

2009:

Qualified as #4 seed (7-3-3)
