KERRVILLE, TX --
NAIA scholarship UH-Victoria
used a pair of Schreiner
defensive lapses - one in each
half - to score a 2-0 win over
the Mountaineers in the season
opener for both teams.
The first half was played at a
fast pace by both teams and was
very evenly matched. In
the final minute before
halftime, UHV (1-0) took its
only corner kick of the match.
A well played ball to the far
corner trying to reach UHV's
Rajan Ghag (6'3") was
accidentally headed into the SU
goal by a Schreiner player.
The Jaguars had a narrow 7-6
lead in shots over SU (0-1) in
the opening half.
In the second half, UHV had the
better of the opportunities but
the match still was a one goal
differential twenty minutes in
until a defensive lapse left
Houston-Victoria's Adrian
Mendoza uncovered in front of
the goal. Mendoza took the
pass from Maurico Malagon, spun
and scored to provide the final
score. UHV outshot the
Mountaineers 6-0 in the second
half.
SU's senior goalkeeper, Tim
Martinez, recorded five saves in
the match. For SU, senior
Jorge Ramos had two of the shots
in the match.
Schreiner plays its first
competition against a
non-scholarship program Saturday
at
4:00 pm when SU hosts Centenary
College.
