SU Rolls into ASC Tournament with Shutout vs. CUA
(4/18/06)  Schreiner rolled over Concordia-Austin, 7-0, and will carry its late-season success into the ASC Championship Tournament next week.  The Mountaineers were dominant in every match, losing only two games all day.  Senior Jay Govan played his final regular-season match.  He partnered with Christian Sasam at #1 doubles for an 8-1 win and then swept his opponent at #3 singles by 6-0, 6-0 scores.  Sasam won 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles.  Trey Brannen continued his overpowering run in his freshmen season.  He played #2 doubles with Josh Schumann and they won 8-0.  Brannen then went 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles while Schumann was just as impressive at #6 singles.  Not to be outdone, Brent Coleman and Zach Browning also won 8-0 at #3 doubles before Coleman rolled, 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles and Browning did the same at #5 singles.  With the victory, SU locks up third place in the ASC West division final standings and advances to the ASC Championships next week against #2 seed (East Division) Mississippi College in Tyler, TX.  The winner plays #1 seed (West Division) Hardin-Simmons in the semifinals.

Mountaineers Dominate HPU in Govan's Home Finale
(4/14/06)  Senior Jay Govan played his final home match at SU and his teammates sent him out on a high note as the Mountaineers dominated Howard Payne, 6-1.  Christian Sasam, Trey Brannen, Brent Coleman, Zach Browning and Josh Schumann all won both their matches.  Govan paired with Sasam at #1 doubles and cruised to a 8-3 win.  Then Sasam won at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-0.  Brannen and Schumann partnered for a 8-0 whitewash at #2 doubles.  Brannen continued his recent red-hot streak with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #2 singles.  Schumann dominated his match at #6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.  Coleman and Browning formed the #3 doubles team and scored an 8-5 win.  Coleman then won at #4 singles, 6-2, 6-2 while Browning won at #5 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Brannen Shines Again but HSU Wins Big Points and Match
(4/13/06)  Hardin-Simmons won the big points when it needed them, and those points were the difference in a 6-1 win over SU.  Schreiner started quickly in doubles, jumping out to early leads in all three matches.  HSU rallied in two of the three matches for 8-6 wins.  Trey Brannen and Josh Schumann teamed at #2 doubles for a 9-8 (8-6) win over HSU's #2 duo, but HSU still won the doubles point.  In singles, SU again started quickly but HSU rallied.  Brannen continued his outstanding freshmen season with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win at the #2 spot.  Brannen is 8-2 this year in singles and 8-2 in doubles.  He has not lost a match in singles or doubles since the St. Mary's match on March 22nd (6 matches ago).  Schuman returned to the singles lineup and was edged in his match at #6 singles by 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.

Doubles Mastery Leads SU to 5-2 Win over TLU
(4/11/06)  Schreiner swept all three doubles matches again and used the momentum to power to a 5-2 win over TLU in Seguin.  Christian Sasam, Trey Brannen, Jay Govan and Zach Browning all won two matches for the Mountaineers.  SU's #1 doubles team of Brent Coleman and Riley Winterringer had the toughest struggle, but won 9-7.  Schreiner's #2 pairing of Brannen and Govan cruised to an 8-2 win.  Brannen then won 7-5, 6-1 at #2 singles.  Govan won his match by 6-2, 6-4 scores.   Sasam and Browning teamed at #3 doubles to post an 8-5 win.  Sasam then won at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-0 while Browning won a three set thriller by 6-4, 4-6 (12-10) scores.  The Mountaineers have not lost in doubles in their last three matches.

Mountaineers Dominant at Sul Ross State, 7-0
(4/7/06)  Going into a tough week of matches for SU Men's Tennis, the Mountaineers got just what it needed -- a dominant win -- by sweeping all 9 matches at Sul Ross State.  The Mountaineers did not lose a set the entire match.  Trey Brannen, Riley Winterringer, Jay Govan and Brent Coleman each had two wins.  Coleman and Winterringer paired at #1 doubles for an 8-3 win.  Govan and Brannen paired at #2 doubles for an 8-1 victory.   Christian Sasam powered past his opponent at #1 singles (7-6, 6-2).  Brannen won at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.  Winterringer (6-1, 6-0), Govan (6-2, 6-0) and Coleman (6-0, 6-0) were even more dominant in their wins at #3-#5 singles respectively.

Singles Success Carries Southwestern Past Mountaineers
(4/5/06)  Schreiner swept all three doubles matches, but only gained one point.  After visiting Southwestern took 4 of six singles matches, the visitors came away with the 4-3 win in Kerrville.  Trey Brannen and Jay Govan each recorded two match wins to pace the Mountaineers but it wasn't enough.  The two teamed up at #2 doubles for an 8-4 win and then Brannen defeated his opponent at #3 singles by 6-2, 6-1 scores.  Govan had a tougher time at #4 singles, but still prevailed; 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.  Riley Winterringer and Brent Coleman teamed up for an 8-3 win at #1 doubles and Christian Sasam and Zach Browning paired at #3 doubles for an 8-4 for Schreiner.

Winterringer Named ASC West Player-of-the-Week
(3/30/06)  Sophomore Riley Winterringer was named American Southwest Conference Player-of-the-Week for the West Division for the week of March 22-28.  Winterringer posted a win at #3 singles at NCAA Division II St. Mary's in a tough 5-4 loss.  He then led the Mountaineers with two match wins in a 5-2 win over visiting McMurry in ASC play.  He paired with Christian Sasam at #1 doubles to post a 9-8 win over McMurry's top duo and then dominated at #3 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Team Effort Leads SU to 5-2 Win Over McMurry
(3/25/06)  Every Schreiner men's tennis player recorded a win as the Mountaineers downed McMurry in their ASC opener.  Riley Winterringer and Trey Brannen again led the way with two wins each but it was a true team effort for SU.  Winterringer paired with Christian Sasam at #1 doubles to record a tough 9-8 (7-2) victory and then won convincingly at #3 singles 6-0, 6-1.  Brannen paired with Josh Schumann at #2 doubles for a 9-7 win and then cruised at #4 singles 6-2, 6-3.  Jay Govan came from behind to post a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at #2 singles and Brent Coleman won his match at #5 singles by 6-2, 7-5 scores.

St. Mary's Escapes with 4-3 Win Over Mountaineers
Schreiner gave NCAA Division II St. Mary's all it could handle and nearly pulled off the road win in a tough 4-3 loss.  "We had service breaks late in both #1 and #2 doubles but couldn't pull them out," says head coach Lee Jennings.  "Sasam and Brannen also had chances to win at #1 and #4 singles but lost to quality opponents.    The Mountaineers were led by Brent Coleman and Josh Schumann who each won two matches.  The two paired for a win at #3 doubles (8-4) and then Coleman won at #5 singles (7-5, 6-2) and Schumann at #6 singles (6-1, 6-1).  Riley Winterringer won at #3 singles by 4-6, 6-1, (12-10) scores.  "This was exactly the kind of tough match we needed heading into an imporantant ASC match at home on Saturday."

Schreiner Men's Tennis Cruises Past Wabash, 5-2
SU Men's Tennis bounced back from a 8-1 loss at #5 Trinity on Saturday with a convincing 5-2 win over Wabash (IN) College on the Mountaineer Courts.  Jay Govan, Riley Winterringer, Trey Brannen and Brent Coleman each recorded two wins on the way to the victory.  The #1 doubles team of Govan and Christian Sasam set the tone with an 8-4 win.  Then Govan recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #4 singles.  Winterringer and Coleman teamed up for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles, then Winterringer posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at #2 singles, while Coleman won his match, 6-0, 6-3.  Trey Brannen won at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-1 after teaming with Josh Schumann for an 8-5 win at #3 doubles.  The Mountaineers have the next two weeks off before returning to action.

SU Smashes LeTourneau Before Rains Halt Play
The Schreiner Men's Tennis team was supposed to play four matches this weekend, but only one was played due to consistent rain in the Dallas area.  The Mountaineers got the most out of what they were able to play and handled LeTourneau, 4-1.  Riley Winterringer and Trey Brannen led the way for SU with 1.5 points each.  Winterringer teamed with Brent Coleman at #2 doubles to pound LU's team of Ehmke/Dodson, 8-0.  He then cruised at #4 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win.  Brannen was nearly as impressive, teaming with Josh Schumann at #3 doubles for an 8-4 win, and then posting a thrilling 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 win at #2 singles.  Christian Sasam won his match at #3 singles by 6-2, 6-3 scores.

Winterringer, #3 Doubles Team Place 5th at HEB Invitational
After a balmy winter season leading up to the team's first spring event, it would figure that an arctic blast would pound the Hill Country for the Schreiner-hosted HEB Invitational.  Eight teams competed in the event, including two NCAA Division II programs, juco powerhouse Temple College and several American Southwest Conference schools.  Riley Winterringer and SU's #3 doubles team of Christian Sasam and Zach Browning had the most success -- each finishing fifth in their respective flights.   Winterringer beat counterparts from both St. Mary's (6-2, 6-3) and McMurry (6-1, 7-5) to finish 2-1 in the event.  The Sasam/Browning team, thrown together at the last moment due to an injury to Jay Govan, defeated teams from Texas Lutheran and Howard Payne (each by 8-4 scores) and also finished 2-1.  Sasam finished 7th in #1 singles.  After a tough three-set loss in the second round (10-8 in the third set), he bounced back to win 6-4, 6-4 over Howard Payne's #1 player.  Brent Coleman equaled Sasam as he won 6-4, 6-3 over McMurry at #2 singles.  Josh Schumann also finished 7th in flight #5 after pounding his counterpart from St. Mary's 6-1, 7-5.

Govan Wins Consolation Singles at ASC Individuals
Senior Jay Govan (San Antonio, TX) won the flight #2 singles consolation at the ASC Individual Championships in Tyler.  He was one of several Mountaineers who had a successful weekend.  A Mountaineer advanced to at least the singles quarterfinals in every flight except #4.  At #1 singles, sophomore Christian Sasam (Pearland, TX) was knocked out by top seed and eventual winner David Wu from Hardin-Simmons but gave Wu his toughest match of the weekend.  Sophomores Riley Winterringer (Austin, TX) and Brent Coleman (Portland, TX) reached the semifinals at #5 and #6 singles respectively.  Coleman was beaten by #2 seed and eventual winner Ross Bennet of McMurry.  Winterringer and Coleman teamed up at #3 doubles and reached the semifinals before falling.

Sasam Wins Open Singles Title at Dr. Pepper Open
Schreiner sophomore Christian Sasam (Pearland, TX) won the Open Singles title at the Dr. Pepper/Kerrville Adult Open this past weekend.  Christian defeated Michael Kingsley 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 in the final.  In the consolation bracket, senior Jay Govan (San Antonio, TX) won the title with a 1-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory over Brad Loane.     On his way to the title, Christian's toughest win was a three set battle (7-6, 6-7, 6-3) vs. his Mountaineer teammate, sophomore Josh Schumann (San Antonio, TX) in the third round.  In the men's doubles championship, it was an All-Schreiner affair as the tandem of freshman Trey Brannen (Austin, TX) and Schumann defeated Govan and Sasam.
