Mountaineers Fall in Another Close Match
Schreiner held a slim 4-3 lead
with two matches remaining but Howard Payne won both in
three sets to pull out the 5-4 win. Howard Payne won
two of three doubles matches to earn an early 2-1 lead
entering singles action. The lone SU point came from
the #3 doubles team of Ben
Jackson and
Carlo Sasam who posted an
8-4 win.
In singles, SU quickly got on
top as the Mountaineers won handily at #1, #3 and #4
singles.
Christian
Sasam defeated HPU's #1 player Ricky Gonzalez,
6-1, 6-2.
Trey Brannen (#3) and
Brent Coleman (#4) were
similarly impressive in victory. Brannen won
comfortably, 6-4, 6-2 while Coleman cruised, 6-1, 6-1.
The match outcome came down to
Jackson (#5 singles) and
Zach Browning (#6 singles)
but both came up just short in hard-fought matches.
Jackson lost 7-5, 3-6, 6-7 while Browning was defeated 4-6,
6-3, 3-6. Schreiner dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in
