Mountaineers (Again) Show Resurgence at
ITA Regionals
The Schreiner
University Men's Tennis team continued to show improvement
at their last tournament of the fall season in Dallas.
In doubles, freshman Michael Streeter and junior Ben Jackson
won their first match, 8-5, against Hardin-Simmons. Their
next round was against the #1 seeds of the tournament from
Trinity. They hung in there with the Trinity duo throughout
the match but lost 4-8. Also, the doubles team of sophomore
Trey Hernandez and junior Tory Manchester won their first
round against Hendrix College, 8-6. They met up with the
eventual winners of the doubles draw - from UT-Tyler -
losing the match, 2-8. The last double team, freshman Parker
Wells and junior Stephen Franklin, lost in the first round
against UMHB, 1-8.
In the singles draw, SU proved that they came to compete and
it showed in their play. Hernandez, Streeter, Jackson,
McClintock, and junior Danny Okland all won their first
rounds. Jackson had a chance to upset a Trinity player in
the second round, but lost in a very close match 4-6,
6-7 (6-8). Hernandez looked to get revenge from the same
opponent he lost to in the previous tournament. He fought
hard yet yielded a 4-6, 0-6 defeat. Okland and McClintock
were matched up against players from nationally ranked
UT-Tyler and both dropped their matches. Streeter had the
best performance by an SU player, winning his first two
rounds and making it to the round of 16 in the main draw.
Streeter lost his last match to a Trinity player in a hard
fought match, 3-6, 1-6.
The other SU single players, Manchester, Franklin, and
Wells, dropped their first rounds thus taking them to the
back draw of the tournament. In his first round, Manchester
lost a tough match to a player from Southwestern University.
He dropped the first set 2-6, but came fought back in the
second set before losing it 6-7 (1-7). Franklin lost his
first round to a player from Trinity and lost his second
round contest to a player from UMHB. Wells dropped his first
round to a UT-Tyler player but bounced backed to win his
second match 6-3, 6-4. In his third round, he came up
against a player from UMHB and lost the first set 1-6.
He then bounced back and competed in the second set before
dropping it 4-6.
The Mountaineers are now finished with their fall season and
look forward to the main part of the year which begins in
the spring, with tremendous optimism for the 2010 season. |
