Austin
College Gets Big Lead and Holds Off SU, 6-3
Photo: Freshman Trey
Hernandez was sick all week and had a 101 degree temperature
but still gave a great effort vs. Austin College
Blame Schreiner's slow start on the cold weather but the
Mountaineers dropped all three doubles matches and couldn't
recover in a 6-3 loss to Austin College at the Cree Tennis
Center in Kerrville.
Austin College had a pretty easy time cruising through SU's
three doubles units and quickly were up 3-0.
In singles action, sophomore Tory Manchester quickly earned
the Mountaineers' (2-7) first point at #4 with a 6-1, 6-2
win. Unfortunately, SU lost at #1 singles and trailed
4-1. When Schreiner also lost at #3 singles, Austin
had the match wrapped up.
Still, several Mountaineers kept fighting to the end.
Sophomore Danny Okland battled back after losing the first
set to score a 5-7, 6-2 (10-8) win at #2 singles and
freshman Jesse McKinney won at #6 singles in straight sets
(6-3, 6-2). Sophomore Stephen Franklin lost at #5
singles in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 5-7.
SU now is off for 10 days before returning to the court. |
