KERRVILLE, TX --
The first year of the Wade Morgan era for Schreiner Men's
Tennis ended Saturday with a 7-2 home loss to McMurry at the
Cree Tennis Complex. Schreiner got a win at #3 doubles
and a win at #5 singles to account for its two points.
McMurry (3-3 in ASC) came out and quickly took victories at
#1 and #2 doubles. SU's #3 doubles team of junior Matt
Salazar and freshman Travis Pflughaupt battled and
eventually pulled out a hard fought win in their match, 9-8,
which included a 7-5 tiebreaker win.
Down 1-2 after doubles, Schreiner (1-5 in ASC) lost straight
sets matches at its first four singles spots. The
closest any of the players came was at #2 where freshman
Cameron Timber lost 6-3, 6-3. At #5 singles, junior
Nathan West won convincingly, 6-1, 6-2. Pflughaupt
rolled to a 6-0 win at #6 singles, but lost 6-3 in the
second set and 10-7 in the tiebreaker.
Despite a team of all freshmen or first year players, with
the sole exception of Salazar who is the only holdover from
last year's team,
Schreiner earned the same number of ASC wins as in three of
the last four years of conference play (SU was 2-4 in 2010).
The entire roster is eligible to return but much will change
for Schreiner Men's Tennis going into the fall. Morgan
has already proven to be a highly proficient and successful
recruiter, and has seven commitments for next year's team
with the summer yet ahead. Expect more competition and
success in the future as Morgan implements his coaching and
recruiting talents to the benefit of SU's players.
