Mountaineer student-athletes again
will largely be on the road over the
coming week. Several of our teams
will head to Marshall, TX during all
or part of the weekend for big ASC
contests. The soccer teams enjoyed
particular success and several other
Mountaineers had impressive
individual performances. The next SU
home contest will be one week from
tomorrow, when the Schreiner Soccer
teams hope to unveil their new
bleachers for soccer fans. More on
that next week.
Here's a quick recap from last
week's activities and a schedule of
the week ahead:
WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-0-1
last week. Notched a 0-0 tie at
Texas Lutheran and throttled NAIA
scholarship Huston-Tillotson, 8-0,
on the road. Two of SU's most
lopsided wins in the past six years
have already come this year. In the
two matches, SU held a 17-0
advantage in goals. As impressive as
those results are, they probably
pale compared to the TLU tie.
Between 2004-08, the CLOSEST SU has
come to TLU was 5-0 losses in both
2006 and 2007. As far as we know,
this is the first time that
Schreiner has ever tied TLU in a WS
match. Unfortunately, as was the
case with the Dallas Christian match
(SU won 9-0), the home team did not
keep stats so we don't have more
information on who scored and who
assisted in the match.
MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last
week. The Mountaineers broke a 0-0
tie late in regulation on sophomore
Taylor Bontz's goal with five
minutes remaining was the game
winner over TLU in Seguin. Sophomore
Matt Johnson picked up his second
shutout win of the season. The win
propels SU into 6th place in the ASC
with a 2-1 record. First half goals
by freshmen Kelan Robinson and Eric
Poe gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead
at halftime. In the second half,
(NAIA scholarship) Huston-Tillotson
roared back with three goals to
escape with the win. Coach Hayes
substituted freely throughout the
match, giving all of his players a
chance to show what they can do in
the non-conference match.
WOMEN'S GOLF: SU finished 5th
at the UT-Dallas Lady Comet
Invitational at Canyon Creek CC in
Richardson, TX. The Mountaineers
played short-handed on the first day
and was only able to manage a team
score of 351. Schreiner was (almost)
back to full strength on the second
day, and their team score shrank to
334 but it wasn't enough to move
higher in a field with four other
highly-ranked teams. Sophomore Sarah
Stillwell was 8th overall after
shooting 84, 83. Freshman Ashley
Hernandez, playing her best golf in
her young career, shot 87, 84 to
finish 15th. Senior Surraya Minhas
shot a pair of 87's, while freshman
Gabby Rosales shot 93, 82. Junior
Liz Calderon was injured for the
first round, but came back to shoot
85 on the second day.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: finished
7th at the Texas D-III Championships
in Seguin on Saturday. Once again,
sophomore Dionel Alves again was
SU's top finisher, in 30th place.
The Maia brothers were 2nd (Ryan)
and third (Michael) for the
Mountaineers. Next to cross the line
were sophomore Tom Pappas and
freshmen David Machado and Jonathan
Ferguson.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY:
freshmen Amanda Mendoza and Kimbery
Gotelli were SU's participants at
the Texas D-3 Championships in
Seguin. Mendoza posted her third
straight strong performance, this
time finishing 6th individually, and
knocked more time off her
school-best time in the process. Her
time of 25:35 was 15 seconds better
than her first race - at McMurry.
MEN'S TENNIS: played at the
ITA West Regional Championships. No
results have yet been reported.
