Our
winter sports teams ended their
season this past weekend and just
about all of our spring sports teams
are now in action. The two golf
teams have their first tournament
next week in Temple and Salado.
Here's a look back at the end of the
basketball seasons and a quick recap
on last weekend's spring sports
action.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-1
last week. Lost at #3 Howard Payne
and beat Sul Ross State, 77-75, in
Alpine. In the win at SRS, Schreiner
erased a nine-point lead with 0:52
remaining in the game and won on a
basket by Kerrie Carter in the final
seconds. The Mountaineers ended the
season in 6th place in the ASC West
Division. Sophomore Monica Enriquez
ended the season ranked among the
ASC's best in several categories
including scoring (11th), assists
(5th), free throw percentage (5th),
steals (6th) and made three
pointers/game (7th). Freshman
Courtney Davis was second on the
team in scoring while sophomore
Kerrie Carter led the team in
rebounding and was fourth in
scoring. Senior Liberty Liesmann
finished her career in style and had
a strong final month of the season
which included her career high
scoring night of 19 points vs.
#16-ranked Hardin-Simmons.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2
last week. Lost at Howard Payne,
97-99, and at Sul Ross State, 65-67.
The Mountaineers ended the season
with two tough last second losses
and ended the year in 7th place in
the ASC West. Individual
achievements, particularly with SU's
two seniors, abound. Kevin Deans had
a huge year and finished among the
ASC's best in scoring (9th),
rebounding (5th), field goal
percentage (6th), offensive rebounds
(4th), defensive rebounds (7th) and
minutes played (10th). Fellow senior
Jonathan Young was as impressive,
placing among the ASC leaders in
both assists (3rd), steals (4th),
scoring (15th) and assist/turnover
ratio (6th) and was third on the
team in scoring. Freshman Richard
Moore made a major splash in his
first year, finishing second on the
team in scoring and finishing as the
ASC's top scoring freshman (13th
overall).
BASEBALL: went 2-0 last week.
The red-hot Mountaineers improved to
7-1 on the year after sweeping
Austin College by scores of 9-7 and
7-1. One of the big stories of the
year continues to be the SU
pitching. Sophomore Chris Armijo
(2-0) gave up two earned runs in
seven innings while junior Kevin
Jones pitched out of a jam in the
eighth and set the side down in
order in the ninth in game #1 to get
his first save. In the second game,
freshman Colton Hermes (2-0) pitched
seven innings without giving up an
earned run as the Mountaineers
cruised to the win. Senior Jeremiah
Kester had another strong weekend,
going 7-for-8 for the weekend.
Thomas Cable had two key hits,
including a two-run home run in
Saturday's win.
MEN'S TENNIS: went 2-1 last
weekend at ASC Crossover. The
Mountaineers beat Howard Payne, 5-4,
and then beat LeTourneau by the same
score before falling to tournament
host, McMurry, 3-6. It was a team
effort as just about every SU
starter had two singles wins in the
three matches.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-3 last
weekend at ASC Crossover. Lost to
Howard Payne 2-7, LeTourneau, 1-8,
and to host McMurry 0-9. #2 singles
player Patty Santiago was injured in
the first match which left Schreiner
shorthanded the rest of the weekend.
SOFTBALL: went 0-2 at Trinity
last weekend. Junior Megan Eichman
had two of SU's five hits. |
