This
weekend will be a busy one on campus
for SU sports teams. The Women's and
Men's Basketball teams will each
have their final two games on
Thursday and Saturday, with the
latter being Senior Day for WBKB
players Lynn Stow and Amanda Flores
as well as Justin Walker, Ronnie
Barney and Stan Crockett for the
MBKB team. Softball starts its
season today with a road game at
TAMUI. This weekend will also be the
home opening weekend for SU Baseball
as you will see in the schedule
below. Here's a quick update of last
week's contests and a schedule for
the next week:
BASEBALL: SU beat back both
the weather and Southwestern
University to record a 9-2 win on
Sunday which earned the team a split
of their doubleheader. The
Mountaineers lost the first game,
14-0. Senior Kevin Jones again was
strong on the hill, throwing five
innings of shutout ball to get his
first win of the year. He was
supported by 14 SU hits and had
plenty of run support. Sophomores
J.D. Escobar and Eric Crenwelge each
had three hits on the day. Sophomore
DH Matt Tomasello was again having a
strong day at the plate, but
suffered a major injury sliding into
home plate while scoring the game's
final run.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lost at
#9 McMurry and at Hardin-Simmons.
The Mountaineers had a difficult
time in their annual trip to
Abilene, dropping both games.
Freshman Anna Fareed led SU last
week, averaging just under 15 points
per game, while sophomore Courtney
Davis averaged nearly 13 per night
in the losses.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: lost at
McMurry and Hardin-Simmons. Like the
SU Women, Schreiner's men's team
also had a tough trip to Abilene.
The Mountaineers have gone with a
lineup featuring freshmen and
sophomores almost exclusively over
the past week. Against HSU,
Schreiner started four freshmen and
one sophomore.
WOMEN'S/MEN'S TENNIS: both
teams' matches with Southwestern
were canceled last week.
