Thursday night is the home opener
for Schreiner Softball as the
Mountaineers host Trinity at
Mountaineer Field. The first game of
the doubleheader is at 5:00 pm.
Schreiner Basketball wrapped up its
season last week and now all of our
spring teams are in full swing.
Here's a quick look back at the week
past and a schedule of events coming
up in the next week:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: beat Sul
Ross State and lost to #2 Howard
Payne. Schreiner closed its 2007-08
season with a win and a loss to the
nation's #2 team. SU beat Sul Ross
State in overtime and was led by
junior Monica Enriquez who scored 28
points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 7
steals. She is among the ASC's best
in all four categories. Saturday's
loss to unbeaten HPU marked the end
of the careers of two senior
Mountaineers, Lynn Stow and Amanda
Flores.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: beat Sul
Ross State and Howard Payne.
Schreiner had an eight point lead at
the half and held off SRS in the
closing minutes to win. Senior
Ronnie Barney led SU with 13 points.
Freshman Riley Battle added 12
points. Saturday's loss to Howard
Payne was the final game for SU
seniors Barney, Justin Walker and
Stan Crockett.
BASEBALL: lost a three games
series to visiting Ozarks and lost
to Trinity. The Mountaineers were
not able to contain Ozarks offense
and had trouble scoring runs in
their series loss. SU lost the
opener 10-1 and then lost a
doubleheader by scores of 4-2 and
16-9. Schreiner rallied from a 16-3
deficit in the final two innings to
make it interesting in the series
finale but was undone by six errors.
They lost to the visiting Tigers
15-4 on Tuesday as well.
MEN'S GOLF: Schreiner
finished 8th in the 15-team UMHB
Invitational. Sophomore Kyle Grona
led the Mountaineers each day and
finished 19th overall as all players
were continually pounded by high
winds. The second round was played
with a wind-chill in the 30's early
in the round and winds that gusted
to 50 mph. Freshman Jay Chapman
finished 31st overall. Sophomore
Brent Stanford was in 43rd place.
WOMEN'S GOLF: SU's two
freshmen (Liz Calderon and Kattie
Spencer) tied for the second-best
round of the day among ASC players
in the final day of the UMHB
Invitational. Calderon finished the
tournament with the third best total
among ASC players and finished 20th
overall in a tournament that also
featured past national champion
teams in NAIA and junior college as
well as a top-5 NCAA Division III
team. Sophomore Andrea Roach had her
best tournament as a college player.
Despite only having four players,
the Mountaineers finished 11th
overall.
