Belated Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to campus. Here's the first Mountaineer Update of 2008:

It's been a busy six weeks for our basketball teams. Both teams return home after a series of road games and have two home games this week. This Saturday is also the day of SU Baseball's Alumni Game. The Home Run Derby begins at 11 am and the game begins at 1 pm (weather permitting). Here's a quick rundown of past six weeks. With these two home games coming up, we invite you to come out and support your Mountaineers in important ASC contests.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: (4-6 in ASC West). Schreiner comes into Thursday game looking to end a two-game skid. The Mountaineers had an up and down six weeks. Among the high points were home wins over perennial nationally ranked powerhouse Mississippi College as well as over UT-Tyler. The Mountaineers have beaten 3 of the ASC East Division's best teams already this year - including a road wins at TLU and LeTourneau. With the two recent losses, SU has fallen from third to sixth place in the ASC West.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: (4-7 in ASC West). SU's women's team also had a wild ride over the past six weeks. Schreiner has already swept the season series with Texas Lutheran and posted road wins at LeTourneau and Ozarks. The team also posted a 1-1 record in a tournament in Hawaii over the holiday break. The Mountaineers almost had a perfect trip to the islands and they had a 10-point lead at halftime of the second game but could not hold it. SU will also try to break a short losing skid by returning to the friendly confines of Edington tomorrow night.

MEN'S BASKETBALL vs. Hardin-Simmons (Edington Gym) at 3:00 pm
