Mountaineer Update |
January 24, 2007 |

My
apologies to all (particularly the
members of the SU Basketball teams)
for not getting an update out last
week.
Even though the calendar (and the
weather) clearly indicates that
we're in the middle of winter, we're
only a little over one week away
from the beginning of spring sports
season - and we have a big SU
Basketball doubleheader tomorrow in
Edington Center. There aren't many
more home basketball games left this
season and tomorrow's are important
for both teams so come out and
support your Mountaineers. |

A
quick look back at Mountaineer action ... |
|
|
|
More
on the spring sports next week but
here's a look back and ahead for SU
Basketball ...
MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 2-2
over the past two weeks. Beat Howard
Payne (88-82), beat Sul Ross State
(86-79), lost at Hardin-Simmons
(74-89) and lost at McMurry (71-90).
The Mountaineers (5-8 in ASC) head
into the final month of the season
in the thick of the race for an ASC
postseason spot. Key late game
free-throw shooting led to the two
SU wins. Kevin Deans and Richard
Moore paced SU in the win over
Howard Payne with a combined 40
points. Deans again led Mountaineer
scorers in the SRS win with 23 as
Jonathan Young added 19. Last week,
Schreiner dropped a pair of road
games in Abilene. The Mountaineers
fell to McMurry despite Deans totals
of 19 points and a career-high 17
rebounds.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-4
over the two weeks. The Mountaineers
(5-8 in ASC play) had a difficult
run of nationally-ranked opponents
and also battled weather in their
toughest stretch of the season. Lost
to #9 Howard Payne, beat Sul Ross
State, lost at Dallas, lost at #15
Hardin-Simmons and lost at #13
McMurry. In the Sul Ross State win,
Schreiner used a 34-15 run midway
through the first half to build a
sizeable lead but the game was
really decided late in the second
half when back-to-back three point
baskets by Monica Enriquez and Lynn
Stow ended a SRS rally. |
