First off, let
me apologize to our Spring student
athletes for not getting an update
out last week. I don't want to miss
a chance to recognize some special
successes from last week.
Congratulations to junior Bernard
Pena for pitching a no-hitter in 7-0
win over NCAA Division II Texas A&M
International last week. For his
efforts, Bernard was named ASC
Pitcher of the Week.
This week, more
honors to celebrate. Seniors Kevin
Deans and Jonathan Young each earned
second team All-ASC for Men's
Basketball while freshman Richard
Moore was named to the ASC
All-Freshman team and Honorable
Mention All-ASC. Young also was
named to the ASC All-Defensive team.
More information on all three can be
found on the SU Athletics website
(http://athletics.schreiner.edu).
Here's a quick look at last week's
results and a schedule for a busy
weekend on campus for SU teams. Even
though Spring Break starts, hope you
have time to support your
Mountaineer teams this weekend.
BASEBALL: went 5-2
the last two weeks. Took three of
four from Texas A&M International
and two 2 of 3 at East Texas
Baptist. The Mountaineers start the
"real" season on a high note. SU is
12-3 this year and can point to
standout performances from several
players. Starting pitchers Colton
Hermes and Chris Armijo are a
combined 7-0. Chase Kimball is 1-0
and has two saves and sports a 0.00
ERA. SU's team ERA of 3.90 is more
than 3 runs lower than last year at
this time. Preseason All-ASC pick
Jeremiah Kester is batting at torrid
.561 and leads the ASC in several
offensive categories.
SOFTBALL: went 2-4
the last two weeks. SU split a pair
of games at the LeTourneau
Tournament (including knocking off
the host team) and then went 1-3
last weekend at the ASC Crossover.
This team is improving. One
indication was in the Crossover.
Last year, the Mountaineers lost to
Ozarks 9-0 in 5 innings. This year,
Schreiner beat Ozarks 13-12. Last
year, SU lost to LeTourneau 10-3.
This year, the Mountaineers won at
LU. The team has its first home
games of the year this weekend.
MEN'S TENNIS: went
0-3 the last 2 weeks. Lost to NCAA
Division II St. Mary's, 8-1; lost to
UT-Tyler; 5-4, lost at Trinity, 9-0.
In the three matches, sophomore Trey
Brannen and Carlo Sasam picked up
two of the wins. They each won their
respective singles match vs.
UT-Tyler and then teamed at #2
doubles for another win. Older
brother Christian picked up the lone
match win vs. St. Mary's at #1
singles. Freshman Ben Jackson earned
the final point vs. UT-T with a win
at #5 singles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-2
the last 2 weeks. Lost to Division
II St. Mary's, 8-1; lost at Trinity,
9-0. The Mountaineers continue to
battle injuries. SU was down to only
four players for the Trinity match.
Freshman Amanda Alvarado earned a
win at #2 singles in the St. Mary's
match.
MEN'S GOLF: SU
played its first spring tournament.
Freshman Arnie Martinez finished in
14th place out of approximately 100
players. Despite windy conditions
both days, Martinez shot 76-81 to
lead Schreiner. Sophomore Bobby
Villcheck was SU's next best
finisher in 55th place.
WOMEN'S GOLF:
Schreiner also started its spring
season last week. Freshman Surraya
Minhas, like the entire field, had a
tough time with the windy
conditions, but still managed to
finish in 18th place among 65
players.
