This
will be another quiet weekend on
campus as all of our teams will be
on the road. Next week, our teams
return to the friendly confines of
Kerrville/Schreiner for their
contests. Here's a quick look back
at last week's contests and a
schedule of the week ahead:
Last Week's Results:
MEN'S
SOCCER (1-1 overall, 0-0
in ASC): Lost at Huston-Tillotson,
4-1. The defending Red River
Conference champions, HTU proved too
much for the Mountaineers in this
contest. HTU was aided because
Schreiner had to play the second
half at a one-man disadvantage due
to a penalty. Ryan Ross scored the
lone goal (unassisted) for Schreiner
- his second of the year.
WOMEN'S
SOCCER (1-1 overall, 0-1
in ASC): Lost at Texas Lutheran,
0-5. The tables were turned on SU.
Winners by a 5-0 count in their
season opener the week before,
Schreiner found itself on the wrong
side of the scoreboard against the
perennial ASC power in both team's
conference opener.
VOLLEYBALL
(3-4 overall, 0-1 in ASC): Lost to
#14 Austin College, 2-3, beat host
University of Dallas, 3-1, lost to
Huntingdon, 2-3, to #25 Wheaton
College, 1-3 and at preseason ASC
favorite Texas Lutheran, 1-3. It was
a rough week for Schreiner. Three of
the four losses were to top teams
but the squad is still trying to
deal with injury-caused changes in
the lineup. One bright spot was the
return, after nearly two years, of
injuries, of Xandria White. White
was named to the all-tournament team
at the Dallas Tournament.
MEN'S GOLF:
finished 10th (out of 15
teams) at the highly competitive
John Bohmann Invitational. Starting
four freshmen and a sophomore,
Schreiner shot its lowest scores in
many years (300-301-306=907).
Freshman Steven Bell shot a
one-under par 71 on the opening day
to pace the Mountaineers and
sophomore Kyle Grona, battling
illness and rainy conditions, also
shot a one-under 71 on the final
day. The last round, the
Mountaineers were a man down due to
another illness and still managed to
move up two spots in the tournament
field that featured
nationally-ranked teams from junior
college and NCAA Division III.
WOMEN'S
GOLF: beginning just the
program's second year of
competition, SU finished 10th out of
14 teams at the TLU Lady Bulldog
Invitational. In the first round,
Schreiner set a school-record with a
team total of 356 and was in eighth
place overall. Sophomore Surraya
Minhas was 5th after the first day
with a 79 and freshman teammate Liz
Calderon was 9th with an 82.
Freshman Kattie Spencer added an 86
in her first collegiate round. The
second day, with heavy rains hitting
the area early in the round,
Schreiner didn't fare as well. The
Mountaineers fell two spots but
still finished fourth out of the 7
ASC schools. SU also defeated the
defending ASC champs (TLU) on their
home course.
MEN'S/WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY:
Competed at UT-Tyler Invitational as
individuals. Freshman Michael Maia
was the top SU male runner finishing
36th overall. Sophomore Cynthia
Valadez led SU's females by
finishing 42nd.
