SU Posts Late Rallies in Both Games to Sweep Trinity

Schreiner rallied late in both games of its doubleheader as SU swept visiting Trinity, 5-4 and 9-8.  Freshman Becca Hay picked up the win in each game, one as a complete game starter and the other in relief.

Trinity (1-7) took the lead in the opening game with two unearned runs.  The Mountaineers (2-2) rallied on an RBI triple by junior Sarah Trevino and RBI single by junior Tara Gonzales to tie it in the second inning.  The Tigers got two more runs in the fifth (one unearned) to retake the lead.  SU got one back in the sixth which set up the late game heroics in the bottom of the seventh.  Hay was hit by a pitch and then junior Lyndsie Travis doubled.  After a walk loaded the bases with none out, consecutive RBI singles by freshman Marla Jendrusch and Trevino ended the game.

In the second game, again Trinity got two unearned runs to start the game.  In the second, SU exploded with two outs.  The big blast came when Travis hit her second home run of the year - this a grand slam - as part of a seven run inning.  Trinity answered back when Michelle Gossein hit a grand slam of her own.  Only Jamie Williams missed third base and was called out on appeal, which took one run off the board.  That run would loom large in the end.

Trinity tacked on one run and scored another in the sixth inning to tie the game at 7-7 lead.  Hay relieved SU starter Toman with no one out.  If not for a balk that allowed the tiebreaking run to score, she would have gotten out of the inning without further damage.  Trailing 8-7, SU again rallied in their half of the sixth.  Two Trinity errors and a Toman RBI led to two Schreiner runs and the come-from-behind win and sweep.
