Eichman's
Double Earns Split for SU Softball
Senior
Megan Eichman's double in the bottom of the
sixth inning in the nightcap scored two runs and
carried Schreiner to a 4-2 win and split of
their doubleheader with visiting Texas Wesleyan.
Texas Wesleyan won the opener 2-0 with a pair of
runs in the top of the seventh to break a
scoreless tie in the opener.
In that first game, freshman Becca Hay was
pitching a gem through six innings. Texas
Wesleyan, an NAIA scholarship program, reached
Hay and the Mountaineers (5-7) for two runs in
their final at bat. Schreiner was held to
two hits in the game.
In the finale, Hay factored into the early
scoring as well. Batting with the bases
loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Hay was hit
on the pitch and was credited with an RBI.
She had to leave the game and did not return.
Still, Schreiner had a 1-0 lead but it didn't
last long. Texas Wesleyan answered with a
run of its own, with the benefit of an SU error
to tie the score.
Schreiner had runners in scoring position with
less than two outs in all but one inning but was
struggling to score. In the sixth, that
changed. After back-to-back walks to open
the inning, TWU made a pitching change and the
SU bats got hot. With bases loaded and one
out, Eichman drilled a pitch into the gap to
score two. Two batters later, junior
Lyndsie Travis lined a single to score Eichman
and make it 4-1, SU. The Rams got one run
back in the bottom of the inning but that was
all.
Junior Patsy Toman equaled Hay's performance in
game one, scattering five hits and only allowing
one earned run to pick up her second victory of
the season. Schreiner opens ASC West play
this weekend. |
