Softball Holds Off Rally, Splits Series with 2X ASC Champs

Schreiner starting pitcher Patsy Toman threw her fourth complete game in 24 hours, and held off a Hardin-Simmons rally to win the second game of a doubleheader and earn a second-straight dh split with the two-time defending ASC West champions.  Hardin-Simmons hit three home runs in the first game to score a 7-4 win.

With the wind blowing out at Mountaineer Field, it came as no surprise that plenty of runs would be scored today.  The Cowgirls (8-6, 2-2 in ASC) came out bombing early in the first game.  Sadye Hill hit one homer and Cricket Criner hit her first two home runs of her career to pace HSU.  SU freshman Marla Jendrusch drove in two runs with a double to close the gap to 5-3 in the fifth inning, but Criner's second shot was the back-breaker.  Jendrusch and senior Megan Eichman each had two hits.

In the second game, the roles were reversed.  After Hardin-Simmons took a brief 1-0 lead in the first, the Mountaineers (7-9, 2-2 in ASC) unloaded on three HSU pitchers in the first inning.  Before the inning was over, Schreiner had hit two home runs and scored all eight runs.  The big blows came first from junior Sarah Trevino who hit a grand slam and then Eichman who followed three batters later with a two-run dinger.  Jendrusch added two more RBI.  SU couldn't get any other runs and barely held off Hardin-Simmons but the eight runs were just enough.

Hardin-Simmons has won the ASC West Division crown each of the past two years and were picked to win again this year.  Schreiner, despite overcoming injuries, again showed that they are a team on the rise in the ASC.
