CUA Has Two Big
Last Inning Rallies and 4 Game Sweep
Twice
Schreiner surrendered four-run leads in the last
inning to Concordia-Texas and dropped all four
games of their series. The Tornadoes (4-4
in ASC) won the first game on Wednesday, 11-3
and then scored five times in the bottom of the
seventh to win 7-6 in the nightcap. On
Thursday, Schreiner took another big lead into
the bottom of the seventh and again lost, this
time by 8-7. The series finale saw
Concordia score the final 10 runs in a 10-2 win.
CUA scored early and often in the first game,
getting 5 runs in the first and never being
challenged by the visiting Mountaineers (2-6 in
ASC). By the bottom of the fourth, it was
11-2. One bright spot was junior Sarah
Trevino's second home run of the season.
In the second game, SU scored three runs in the
third to take a one-run lead. The
Mountaineers added single runs in the fourth,
fifth and sixth inning to lead 6-2 but couldn't
score in the seventh. In the sixth, junior
Autumn Vara hit her first home run of the
season. Senior Megan Eichman had four hits
in five at-bats but none of it was enough
In their final turn at bat, CUA's Megan Pulido
led off the inning with her second home run of
the game. Later in the inning, Karen Smart
hit a three-run homer to tie the score and CUA
eventually scored the game-winner later in the
inning.
In the first game on Thursday, again Schreiner
seemed to have the game in hand. The two
teams traded the lead early. Included in
the scoring was Vara's second home run in
24-hours. With the game tied 3-3 game, SU
raced ahead with four runs in the sixth led by
Trevino's third homer of the season and second
of the series, this a three-run shot. Two
Schreiner errors started CUA on their comeback
bid in the bottom of the seventh and the
Tornadoes didn't stop until they'd completed
their comeback. In the series
finale, CUA rocked SU starting junior pitcher
Patsy Toman for seven runs in 1-1/3 innings,
erased Schreiner's early lead and never looked
back in the easy win.
