Schreiner Opens
Season with Doubleheader Sweep at Trinity
Schreiner Softball opened its 2009 season with a
doubleheader sweep at Trinity by scores of 6-3
and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. Despite
being picked seventh in the ASC West by fellow
coaches, the 2009 team has high expectations
that they will surprise many. Trinity may
be the first on the list.
SU (2-0) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the
first inning. RBI singles by seniors Sarah
Trevino and Tara Gonzales staked the
Mountaineers to the early lead. In the
fourth inning, freshman Ashley Bouthout tripled
and scored on junior Lindsay Rutkowski's RBI
single. In the sixth, SU added two more
runs, keyed by an RBI single by freshman Rachel
Herzog. Trinity scored its three runs in
its final at bat to close the gap but it was too
little, too late. Freshman Becca Hay (1-0)
pitched the complete game victory, giving up
three earned runs on nine hits.
In the second game, it was a scoreless pitching
duel going into the top of the fifth. Hay
drove in two with a two-out double.
Trinity answered with a run in the bottom of the
inning, but SU countered with three more in the
sixth. Senior Lyndsie Travis started the
inning with a double. Later in the inning,
with the bases loaded, Bouthout tripled to clear
them and make it 5-1.
The Tigers (0-4) scored two runs in the bottom
of the inning but senior Patsy Toman (1-0) set
them down in order in the seventh to get the
complete game win. She gave up two runs on
six hits in seven innings of work. |
