Mountaineers
Rip Two More Teams on Day #2 of AZ Trip
Photo: Freshman Rachel Herzog at the plate
of a recent game.
Schreiner had
a surprisingly easy time beating Edgewood, 9-0,
and then swamped a greatly overmatched Mount
Mary team 25-0 in day #2 action at the Tucson
Invitational. The Mountaineers wrap up
their tournament today with two games including
one against the nation's top-ranked team.
In the first game, freshman Becca Hay threw a
one-hitter and Schreiner (11-2) scored two runs
in the first inning and took charge with two
more in the second and three in the third.
SU added two more runs in the fifth and the
mercy run was applied to end the game early.
Schreiner continued its hot hitting by pounding
out 12 hits. Hay (6-1) had 11 strikeouts
in the complete game performance.
In the second game, Schreiner faced little
competition. Senior Patsy Toman (5-1) had
little trouble mowing down the Mt. Mary team.
Senior Tara Gonzales had the only over the fence
home run in the game but several Mountaineers
had inside-the-park homers. The score
could have been much worse, but SU showed its
sportsmanship by intentionally making outs to
move the game along.
Today won't be nearly as easy as two of the
tournament's better teams are to face the
Mountaineers. In the first game, SU faces
Lakewood. In the second game, Schreiner
will battle UW-Eau Claire, the nation's #1
ranked team - and defending national champions.
Schreiner has only lost two games this year,
both to nationally-ranked opponents.
Although accurate historical records are not
available, this may well be the best start for a
Schreiner Softball team in the program's
history. |
