SU
Opens ASC Play with Doubleheader Sweep of CTX

and drove in two runs in a 7-0 win over CTX
Schreiner Softball
finally had it's home opener and used big first
innings in each game to sweep visiting
Concordia-Texas by 7-0 and 5-3 scores. It
was also the ASC openers for both schools.
In the first game, SU (13-4, 2-0 in ASC) jumped
all over CTX (8-8, 0-2 in ASC) starter Lyssa
Yates for seven runs on five hits in the bottom
of the first inning. Freshman Rachel
Herzog and Becca Hay and sophomore Marla
Jendrusch each walked to put the first three SU
runners on. Senior Lyndsie Travis drove in
the first SU run with a single. Senior
Sarah Trevino followed with an RBI single of her
own. Senior Tara Gonzales hit a sacrifice
fly to make it 3-0. Schreiner again loaded
the bases, and senior Autumn Vara drove in
another run with a single. Junior Lindsay
Rutkowski's single made it 5-0 and Hay drove in
the final two runs with a double. Although
the Mountaineers didn't score the rest of the
way, it was plenty of run support for Hay (7-2)
and the SU defense. Hay went the entire
game, scattering three hits, striking out nine
and walking just one. Hay, Travis and
Trevino each were two-for-three at the plate.
In the second game, SU again jumped out to an
early lead. Concordia made back-to-back
errors to open the game and put two on with no
outs. After Jendrusch drew a walk to load
the bases, Travis promptly unloaded them with a
long grand slam left center to stake Schreiner
senior starter Patsy Toman (6-2) to the big
lead. It would stay 4-0 until the
top of the fourth when CTX scored two runs.
SU answered in the bottom of the fifth.
Gonzales ripped a double to the base of the
outfield fence and then Hay ripped a triple to
score Gonzoles. SU couldn't get Hay home
as she was thrown out at the plate to end the
inning.
CTX closed the gap to two with a homer from
Jessica Ratan in the sixth. In the
seventh, Concordia was threatening with two on
and two outs. Jodi Hierholzer was picked
off second base, by a snap throw from Jendrusch
and was tagged out in a run down by Gonzales to
end the game.
The two teams play another doubleheader at
Mountaineer Field on Saturday at noon.
