Schreiner Rallies from Big Early Deficit to Earn
Split vs. #21 HPU
Visiting Schreiner rallied from a 9-1 deficit
vs. #21 Howard Payne to get a 17-12 win and earn
a split in their doubleheader on Friday in
Brownwood. Howard Payne won the first
game, 6-3. The two teams play another
doubleheader tomorrow.
Errors were costly to the SU (4-2 in ASC) cause.
In game one, the Lady Jackets (5-1 in ASC) took
advantage of four first inning errors to score
four runs. Iin all, SU committed five
errors in the game which accounted for four
unearned runs. Trailing 6-0 going into the
top of the 7th, SU rallied. Singles by

set the table for senior Tara Gonzales who

was all the closer the Mountaineers would get as HPU beat
freshman Becca Hay (7-4). Hay went six
innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits.
Vara had two hits in the game. Schreiner
also had 6 hits in the game.
In the second game, Howard Payne, which was
ranked in the NFSA Top 25 for the first time,
again took advantage of more early SU errors to
jump ahead 9-1. Schreiner started to rally
in the third inning with three runs and took the
lead with a four-run innings in both the fourth
and fifth and got five more in the sixth. Gonzales
belted her third homer in the nightcap and
senior Sarah Trevino added her first
round-tripper of the season.

giving up nine earned runs and 13 hits, to
improve her record to 8-2. The
Mountaineers pounded out 19 hits led by Trevino
who was 5-for-5 with eight RBI and four runs
scored. Gonzales and Hay had three hits
each. Bouthout and Toman each had two hits
