Mountaineers
Thump HPU Pitchers Again; Take 3 of 4 Games in
Series

Sarah Trevino hit a home run on Saturday, one
day after going 5-for-5 with 8 RBI, as SU won 3
of 4 games with #21 HPU
Visiting Schreiner brought out the bats again
Saturday in scoring 28 runs in a doubleheader
sweep of #21 Howard Payne, 12-10 and 16-2.
SU (6-2 in ASC) won three of four games against
their nationally-ranked foes and scored 45 runs
in the final three games of the series.
In the first game on Saturday, senior Sarah
Trevino belted a home run - one day after going
5-for-5 at the plate and driving in eight runs -
and freshman teammate Becca Hay went deep twice.
All the runs were needed as Schreiner -like in
their 17-12 win Friday night - again rallied
from behind. HPU (5-3 in ASC) was leading
going into the top of the fifth, but the
Mountaineers scored eight times to go ahead
12-9. Hay's grand slam was the big shot
that propelled SU to the win. Senior Patsy
Toman (9-2) got the win and benefitted from SU's
12 hit barrage.
In the second game, Schreiner took control
early. SU got another grand slam, this one
from sophomore Marla Jendrusch in the third
inning, and were never threatened after.
Schreiner bats accounted for 16 more hits in the
game which was halted after five innings for the
mercy rule. Hay ran her record to 8-4 on
the season by giving up just earned runs and
five hits.
Senior Tara Gonzales also continued to hit the
ball hard. She hit two home runs on Friday
and went 4-for-4 in the second game on Saturday.
Going into the series, Howard Payne was 16-2 but
is now 17-5. Schreiner improves to 17-6 on
the season. Four of SU's five losses were
against nationally-ranked teams and SU is 3-4 in
those contests.
