Hardin-Simmons Takes Four Game Series from Schreiner

Hardin-Simmons ran its school-record win streak to 12 straight games, the last four against visiting Schreiner, and swept their series with the Mountaineers.   HSU won the two games on Tuesday by 8-6 and 6-1 scores and swept Wednesday's doubleheader by 9-8 and 9-4 counts.

In the first game of the series, the Cowgirls (12-0 in ASC) jumped ahead 5-0 before Schreiner rallied with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.  In the fourth, senior Autumn Vara's RBI double scored freshman Ashley Bouthout to get SU (6-6 in ASC) on the board.  Junior Lindsay Rutkowski's sacrifice grounder drove home senior Patsy Toman for the second run and senior Tara Gonzales' single scored Vara.  In the fifth, after HSU scored a run to go ahead 6-3, Schreiner tied the score.  ASC Player of the Week Sarah Trevino started the inning with a home run - her second of the year.  An RBI double by Rutkowski and single by Gonzales plated the other runs.

HSU scored the game winning runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits off Toman (9-4).  SU had 12 hits in the game but stranded 9 baserunners.

In the second game, SU couldn't mount much offense besides sophomore Marla Jendrusch's home run in the fourth inning.  HSU scored four runs in the second off freshman Becca Hay (8-5) to that cut the deficit to 4-1 but HSU scored twice in their half of the fourth to expand the lead.

In Wednesday's first game, Hardin-Simmons got on top, 4-1, in the bottom of the third.  In the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers answered with six runs - the big shot being a grand slam by Gonzales - her second HR of the game.  SU had an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh only to see HSU rally on a two-run homer by Lee and a walk with the bases loaded by Hay.

In the finale, HSU again jumped ahead with four early runs.   The Cowgirls led 8-1 before senior Lyndsie Travis' three-run homer brought SU within four but that's as close as the visitors would get.

The Mountaineers don't have much time to regroup.  Mary Hardin-Baylor comes to Mountaineer Field to begin a four-game series on Friday evening.
