Pitchers Throw Pair of Shutouts at Mountaineers

Becca Hay was the hard-luck losing pitcher
despite not giving up an earned run Friday
night.
Visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor kept
Schreiner on its mini losing skid with 3-0 and
1-0 wins in their series opening doubleheader on
Friday night in Kerrville. The two teams
will play another doubleheader at Mountaineer
Field on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
In the first game, UMHB (2-4 in ASC) scored a
run in the first and maintained that 1-0 lead
into the sixth inning. Schreiner (6-8 in
ASC) had scoring opportunities early but hit
into double plays on two occasions with runners
in scoring position and one out to end threats.
The Lady Cru added single runs in both the sixth
and seventh for insurance to get the win.
UMHB outhit SU 9-6. Senior Patsy Toman
(9-4) took the loss, pitching seven innings,
giving up nine hits, striking out two and
walking three in addition to the three earned
runs allowed.
Freshman Ashley Bouthout was the only
Mountaineer with two hits in the first game.
In the nightcap, the Mountaineers again had
early scoring opportunities but squandered them.
Schreiner had the bases loaded with nobody out
and failed to score and also failed to get a run
in in another inning with bases loaded.
The two teams remained in a scoreless tie in the
top of the sixth when UMHB threatened to take
the lead. Senior Tara Gonzales' diving
stab on a hard line drive ended the threat and
inning. In the top of the seventh, UMHB
again got the leadoff hitter on base.
After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to
second, she moved up to third on Bouthout's
error. The runner scored on a well
executed squeeze play which proved to be the
game winner.
Freshman Becca Hay (8-6) was the hard-luck loser
as SU was outhit 6-4. She pitched
seven innings without allowing an earned run,
struck out five and walked just one.
