SU Softball Sweeps TLU; Postseason in Sight

Schreiner swept a doubleheader from TLU by 9-2 and 4-1 scores, and now hold down sole possession of the third and final spot into the ASC Championship Tournament - with one day remaining in the regular season.  Earlier in the day, UMHB split its doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons, which dropped UMHB one game behind the Mountaineers (14-8 in ASC) in the race for the postseason.

In the first game, SU took advantage of wildness by Lady Bulldog pitcher Brigitte Neumann to build an early lead.  Spotted a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Neumann had five wild pitches in the bottom of the first inning which led to three Mountaineer runs.  Although TLU (6-16 in ASC) cut the deficit in half in the third inning, SU broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.  Freshman Rachel Herzog started the inning off with a single.  She stole second and went to third on junior Lindsay Rutkowski's single and both runners scored on senior Tara Gonzales' double.  Gonzales later scored on sophomore Marla Jendrusch's SAC grounder.  Senior Sarah Trevino drove home another run to cap the scoring in the inning.  In the sixth, SU added two insurance runs on another sacrifice groundout by Trevino and a single by freshman Ashley Bouthout.  That was more than enough for freshman Becca Hay (12-8) who pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run while scattering eight hits.

In the nightcap, TLU got on the board first and held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.  That's when senior Lyndsie Travis took over.  Her double off the top of the right-center field fence plated Schreiner's first two runs.  Holding that narrow 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, Travis again came through, this time with an opposite field double just inside the foul line to score another run and then came home on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Senior Patsy Toman went the distance to earn her 13th win against just four losses this year.  She scattered five hits over seven innings and only allowed one run.

With the wins, Schreiner extends its school record total for wins in a season to 25.  The Mountaineers end the regular season tomorrow at Mountaineer Field.  It will be Senior Day and the final home games for SU seniors Gonzales, Travis, Trevino, Toman and Autumn Vara.  Hopefully, it won't be their final games in an SU uniform.
