Mountaineers
Fall to #3 Louisiana College in First Round of
ASC Championships
Photo: Senior Lyndsie Travis hit her 10th homer
of the year but that was all the offense SU
could manage vs. LC.
Schreiner played
mistake-free ball, but still came up on the
short end of a 4-1 score against the 2008
national championship runner up, Louisiana
College, at Trinity View Park in Irving Thursday
night. Life doesn't get much easier for
the Mountaineers as they play their next game
against the loser of the game between the
nation's #1 team, East Texas Baptist, and the #6
team in the nation, UT-Tyler. Those two
teams play at 11 am on Friday and Schreiner
plays the loser of that contest in the 2:00 pm
game on the same field. This is a double
elimination tournament so Schreiner can't afford
another loss or their tournament hopes will end.
Louisiana College, the ASC East Division's #2
team (and #3-ranked in the nation), got on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning
without getting a hit. Caitlin Bankston
got on by a base on balls to start LC's half of
the inning, stole second and scored on a
fielder's choice to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Schreiner had a great scoring chance in the top
of the second. SU got three straight
two-out walks to freshmen Ashley Bouthout and
Rachel Herzog and junior Lindsay Rutkowski to
load the bases, but all three were stranded when
senior Autumn Vara grounded out to end the
threat.
The Mountaineers (26-14) tied the game in the
top of the fourth, when senior Lyndsie Travis
led off the inning with her 10th home run of the
season. Travis is the reigning ASC West
Division Hitter of the Week.
Unfortunately, that was the only hit that
Schreiner could get against LC's McCaslin
Carson.
Louisiana College (33-6) got the go-ahead run
and some insurance in the bottom of the fifth.
Mary Alice Roy walked to start the inning.
Ashley Clement singled. Carson helped her
own cause with an RBI single and Aimee Dubroc
brought two more home later in the inning with
her own single to make the score 4-1.
Freshman Becca Hay (12-10) went the distance,
giving up four runs on six hits, striking out
three and walking four. Carson gave up
only Travis' homer in seven innings, struck out
seven and walked four. |
